Hi,
mate of mine has a pride and joy 911, late 80s. He has a huge problem getting decent work done on it, every time he has something done he seems to get shafted and the car ends up in worse condition. Now his electrics have packed up and he would like to find somewhere to take it were the mechanic loves the porsche as much as he does. He is in Central London.
Any tips or recomendations for him?

p.s. the car is a 20th birthday 911, one of 911 produced. Sorry if thats a bit vague but as you can tell from the handle, I'm not exactly a porsche buff . .

i can reccomend Tognola Engineering in Datchet nr Langley (Slough). (just off the M4)
Has a very impressive workshop full of 2.7 Carrera Rs right through to 993's. Think his prices were a bit lower than maiun dealer and work quality just as high.
Advertises in 911 world and has been a porsche specialist for 15 years+, even has a 993 3.8RS S for himself.

If the car was a "factory" special edition as opposed to a Porsche GB version, then it could be an "Anniversary Carrera" produced to celebrate 25 Years of 911 production.
"J" Program cars (August 1987 to July 1988) Marine Blue Metallic, matching interior leather with an "F Porsche" signature on Headrests. No external Identification, but an Anniversary plaque on dash. 875 Cars produced.
As a last resort to the servicing problem - if the car really is his pride and joy - he could consider taking back to the factory to be fixed. The "Werk 1" Customer Service department is excellent - www.porsche.com/english/company/services/customercenter/default.htm - they will service any porsche of any age, all 959's have to be returned there for service, and are set up to deal with any "Friday" cars that dealers cannot get right. It's directly opposite the factory and quite easy to arrange factory tours whilst you are there. I took my 87 Cabriolet back there as part of a summer holiday last year - great fun.
It costs to get there and stay there, and if serious work is required it's probably best to get a return flight out of Stuttgart and return when they've given the car the all clear. The plus point though is that with exchange rates their labour rates are as cheap as anything you'll get here and you don't have to worry about the experience of the mechanics......
