Just out of interest anyone heard anything about the next gen 911? Figure they're probably working on one for release in the not too distant future. As the last one appeared in 1997 its now coming up to 5 years, which in recent 911 terms is relatively 'old'...

The theory as reported in a recent "CAR" edition as I remember it (lent it to McNab - perhaps he could look it up) was that around 2005 the 911 would split into two different engine models - 6 cylinder and a development of the 8 cylinder engine to be found in the new Cayenne. Boxster replacement plans were also mentioned .....

How similar they will be body style wise, numbers etc not sure.... may just be journalistic speculation but then that's pretty unusual isn't it.......

and it won't be called 997(?) as that Cayenne bit of nonsense has probably nabbed that number.

Will we get the Porsche 1000 soon?

Found that copy of car mentioned earlier last night so heres the situation - from memory.

2002 cayenne v8 - porker for the whole family (ahhh)
2004 new 911 carrera2 sharp handling, flat 6 codename 997
2005 new 911 v8 (Cayenne engine) - the smoother handling gt version

Allegedly also there is a front engine v8 concept project skulking about for the last 2 years as well... Maybe another 928..

Of course its all speculation...

They do tend to go up in ones.

The boxster was 986 because 987 was probably a toaster, 988 was Ferdinand's new washing machine and 989 a nice alarm clock radio.

In all seriousness, they often designate project numbers to model variants, so the Boxster S may be classed as a different project. The reason we got the 993 before the 986 boxster was because of the boxsters long gestation period. When they 'opened' the job it wasx probably 1992 or something.

A 911 with a v8? where will they install it? Surely not behind the rear axle...

another 928:
