I am currently stripping every conceivable ounce from a 911SC (188BHP model from 1980) for track day use & general playing with. I am aiming to reduce 1160kgs to 1000kgs. The power is modest but I assume that with every unneccessary electric motor, bit of interior trim, spare wheel etc etc removedb - it should perform a lot better.

I am looking for the best tried & testing mild tuning for it - engine, brakes suspension etc
Anyone had any good results from 911 upgrades/improvements or good advice for upgrading it for track days(not megabucks though)

look forward to a reply

Your weight loss programme should be achievable, mainly the seats and soundproofing/carpet. Stripping all unnecessary items will also help (C2 RS did without headlamp washers to save a few ounces, although I doubt you have these on yours!). A large amount of weight is in your 'concertina bumpers' so get GRP replacements (maybe C2 style).

Tuning wise, most start with strut braces and a decent MO30 style shocks/springs package all round.

Brakes are upgradeable, maybe 930 items if you have the clearance. You will notice your SC brakes are pretty small compared to the 964 etc.

Engine wise, people mainly worry about the chain tensioner and barrel oil leaks on the 3.0 SC engine, rather than tuning them! You can get extra performance out of them, but it is traditional normally aspirated tuning (cams, head work, maybe even increase in displacement) and can be quite expensive. Your biggest problem is it is quite an old engine with out the modern Motronic ignition, which allows mapping etc. I would say that you'd be looking at maybe 3-5k GBP rebuilding the engine with a few tweaks in it. You may get between 220 and 250 bhp for the money. A better option is getting a second hand 3.2 engine with Motronic, and even better a G50 gearbox, which are tons better than the box in your car. These would cost about 5k, and you'll be able to go up in power more easily - say 280bhp with an increase in displacement to 3.6 (the conversion is not without problems though, so be careful).

If your budget is very tight, lighten the car, then go for front strut brace, cheap suspension upgrade all round (to counter the understeer introduced by the strut brace), sports exhaust and filter (leave other engine mods alone) and keep an eye out for second hand 930 brakes. You'll also find that a cheap set of wider 911 alloys may help, with semi-racing rubber. I would also strongly recommend spending a grand or so on the GRP bumpers.

Budget: 1500 quid for suspension, exhaust, filter, strut brace, odds and ends + 300-700 quid for 930 front brakes + 500 quid-1k for cheap 911 alloys and rubber + 1500 for GRP bumpers etc.

For between 4 and 5 grand, you'd then have a pretty useful track car, pushing out about 210 bhp, power to weight about 200 a tonne.
