maybe mine was a problem car but in 15 months of ownership of a 66 plate V8D I had

Brakes seemed to go from being nearly new to almost needing to be replaced according to the OPC
Lol, the old ones are the best. It's a wonder they didn't try the "our technician recommends new discs as well sir".....

The Cayenne is having a bit of a birthday.

The wheels had done 9 years without a refurb, and had collected a few minor marks over those years, but recently had started to corrode in spots on the surface of the spokes. White worm was spreading over the surface in several places.

TMPS sensors are now 9 years old too, and I needed four new tyres.

The wheels have gone off to the local diamond cut refinisher, and I'll replace the TPMS and new tyres when I get them back.

The steering wheel had become high mileage shiny. I've sent that off to Royal Steering Wheels for a retrim in black alcantara and leather, with red stitching. Will update with pics when it's back.

I'd also previously picked up a scrape on the OSR side of the bumper and wheel arch trim. I took those off and dropped over for paint.

When all this is done, I'll look to get paint correction and refresh the PPF that's 140K miles old and has done it's job, but bears the scars.

My house now looks council from the outside. rolleyes

As Catfood very kindly pointed me in the direction of this thread, I thought I'd check in and say add me to the list of V8SD owners on PH

Picked up this 60k mile, 2013 example a couple of weeks ago and have been thoroughly impressed with almost all aspects of the car.
It feels like a really premium place to be and the torque level means that driving is just an effortless pleasure.

Yes, it's had transfer box failure in the past, fitted with an updated replacement under warranty back in 2020 under the previous owner's gaze.
Still makes a reasonable noise even after the dealer-enforced "emissions update" though a little more noise would be nice!

After treating mine to a birthday as per previous pages, the autobox failed. I dropped the sump and it was full of bits, so catastrophic failure. 140K miles of spirited driving, although at least three gearbox oil changes over the years.

Unlike old MkII Escorts, you can't drop the box out on its own from underneath, so it's motor out.

The sump was full of swarf which has washed through the trans cooler lines and thermostat. I'm hoping I can rinse those out.

Having to do this outside as not enough space in my garage. Wrong time of year for alfresco mechanics.

That is a heavy V8. Everything is jam packed in tight. This is the first time I've been able to see the turbos!

OMG. Brave man taking that on.

We're there any noises coming from the transmission in the lead up to the failure?

Jesus.... I had the power steering radiator replaced on mine this week as I had a small leak.
I thought that was a large disassembly job but it was nothing on you!

I'm now seriously hoping my box never fails lol!

A couple of things had begun to happen prior to the failure. If I was pressing on with foot to the floor, just prior to the redline before the box changed up, there was a real howling noise from the transmission area, I thought it was the transfer box, as this one has done 90K. I'm now sure that was the autobox, as it only happened at high engine revs under load. At constant motorway speeds and general acceleration it didn't make a noise. Secondly the engine became a bit hesitant sometimes on gear changes. I thought it might be EGR blockage, as it's at 140k miles, and has never been to bits. I now think that was the 'box being slow at getting a gear

The thing has been faultless from day one up to this point. Suddenly one day I came to brake at a junction and the car wanted to keep going. I had to brake hard and the engine stalled. From that point on as soon as I selected reverse or drive, the car started moving, if I braked to stop it would stall. I plugged in and read the codes and there was a 'Transmission toque converter lock up system fault'. I thought it might be the solenoid, so drained the fluid to remove the trans sump. The fluid came out all sparkly and full of metallic particles. When I dropped the sump it was full of chunks of friction material. frown

I did this in my garage and had to move the thing out again, so put the sump back on and filled it with cheapy Halfords Dexron fluid. That must have washed out the blocked lock up circuit, as I could now select D or R without it starting to move, but I only had odd gears, so it was definitely terminal.

I didn't even know it had one of these until I had to remove it. :-)

Soz for the radio silence on your loom. As soon as this is back together I'll pull the rear panel out and get the partnumber.

Thanks for that. Interesting.

Mine has been making a weird noise for the last 40k (I'm on 133k) , more prominent when cold, when I'm at town speeds and decelerating down to a crawl/stop. Noise happens when gearbox is taking the load of the vehicle on the down change.

It's not loud but it's always a worry. I've not changed any transmission fluids yet.

I’d be replacing VGT solenoids or getting the turbos rebuild while you’re at that level of disassembly!

Had mine go under extended warranty at 130k, 3000 miles apart, engine out both times

My 2017 V8 S Diesel is currently on 110k miles….due a service in about 10k miles. Car is still under extended warranty, which I can keep extending until the car has 125k miles on it. When my car goes in for its service with circa 120k miles on the clock I will take out a further three years of extended warranty…I will run the car for another 2 1/2 years so I’ll sell it with roughly 170k miles on it with six months warranty left. That way I think someone will take a chance on buying it off me as they will have si months peace of mind.

Awesome car….might try and find a lowish mileage one and go again.

I reckon this is an interesting dilemma.... normally fairly soon after I buy a car I can envisage what I'm (eventually) going to replace it with.
With the sD I genuinely do not know what I could get that would be any kind of improvement.

I can see me doing exactly what you're contemplating here.

Seem to be a lot in the States with 150k miles and a lot more and look tobe able to take it quite easily, I've had one before and loved it and currently looking for another to daily but feel prices are a bit strong currently. Seems to be about a £7k spread from WBAC and advertised prices but the odd low priced car appears occasionally on AT.

Cheers Wookie, I saw your previous post on this. For the minor cost, I'll stick two new genuine ones on. I'd hate to pull all this out again. I did speak to Darkside about doing something with the stock GT17s. They can rebuild a couple of hybrid GTB22s, but the plumbing would then need fabricating and no one else has done it yet. They are also of the opinion that the HP pump doesn't have much spare capacity and I'd probably need to replace that if I wanted lots more power. I'm also about 200 miles from them, and I couldn't face slogging back and forth to there.

The aux drive belt still looks like new. I'll stick one of those on, as it's 9 years & 140K miles old.

The HP pump is driven by a belt on the back of the LHS head. There's no service interval on this, and I've not taken the cover off yet to see how worn it looks. Whilst I have the thing in bits on the floor I'm changing what seems sensible.

I only got an hour on it this weekend to try and get to the starter to get the torque converter bolts out. All pipes off RHS turbo, engine mount off. Starter looks fine, as that looks like an engine out job to replace!!

I have other cars, and had been using my FF as a daily instead of this. Great fun, but not the right impression to take out and about.

There will be no more big V8 diesels in the future of mankind. grumpy
