Finally sorted! Thanks everyone for the info.
In the end I bought a space saver for a Mitsi Evo 6. I knew the tyre size would be wrong but it was cheap enough (fleabay) to see if the rim would fit. The rim was fine and cleared the brakes OK so I used this site.

to work out the right tyre size for the correct overall diameter, ordered and fitted that and am now sorted for my euro trip
