Hi Peeps,
The wifes car has started pulling back while driving as if there is damp in the dist cap. This morning it would not start so I pulled the cap off no probs dry. After a while it started using no throttle with a pop of black smoke, turned the engine off and it did the same again, on the ground where the exhaust kicks out is a patch of black soot so it has to be fuel related. I have a sneaky feeling its a sensor gone but which one??

Thanks

Si

Could well be the CTS - coolant temperature sensor.

If it's telling the ECU the engine is hot when it's cold and/or vice versa then things will be wobbly as you describe.

As I remember (been a while since my 214), it is located on the front, top right as you look into the engine.

I'm at work at the mo so can't add an arrow or anthing to that but you can see the wire coming out of the connector. If memory serves, there are two sensors in that place, one has 1 wire and is for the guage on the dash and t'other is for the ECU - this is the one that's probably gone AWOL.

They're quite commonly going wrong and aren't expensive from a Rover dealer.

Good luck
