A couple of Million to change all the signs, job done.

People will, I imagine, carry on driving at the same speed they already do.
Change what signs?

I agree, it won't make any difference to actual speeds. It just means less people getting done for speeding, if such a thing still happens to drivers doing 80.

In Australia's Northern Territory they used to have no speed limit. When they finally bowed to safety campaigners and introduced one the accident rate went up. I'd like to hear what Brake made of that.

so if we all slow down to 80 it will cost £1 billion... the obvious solution is to raise the limit to 85-90mph as that is what we are doing anyway... wonder if the government will give me a reward for saving the country so much money. :-)

I think you mean a denial of service attack rather than a DNS attack. Unless you mean to aggressively resolve their IP address...

I agree with all of the above.

Its not just Germany though, most of Europe is 80mph (when its dry at least).

Hiding behind the carbon bks is a farce, my car (and bike) are more fuel efficent at 80 than they are are 20/30mph. So by their logic lets make all towns, cities and villages a minimum speed of 56mph

How many here belong the the ABD? They've been campainging for years for sensible speed limits, and fighting the crap spouted by organisatiosn such as BRAKE.
http://www.abd.org.uk/ Go on, join now, or stop complaining when even more stupid anti-motoring laws arrive.

So the government should propose 90MPH, they can negotiate with BRAKE and settle on 80MPH.

A lot of the cost is related to extra fuel spend which the government get a huge kick in tax revenue, like that argument will wash with them eh!

It's just the same as rest of Europe.

We should have 70 in the wet and 80 in the dry.

Simples.

BTW, it won't change my standard motorway speed (SMS), it'll just be legal.

Edited to add - Brake are pulling numbers out of thin air.
I agree about the first point, sir, but I take issue with the second point.

Brake are not pulling these figures out of thin air. They're not magicians.

I notice that Brake do not factor in the financial benefit to UK businesses of increased efficiency of the road network that is achieved by increasing the speed limit, instead relying upon shock tactics of "increased accidents" and "increased carbon footprint".

We need some kind of 'Yes' to 80 campaign on the basis that according to the charity's own research it will be revenue generating for the economy based on increased fuel tax generated.

If you care about the carbons then stopping eating beef is a far better way to cut down your footprint than driving 10mph slower:

This kind of baseless psuedo science factless statistic waving really bugs me.
"...mean more families needlessly suffering from motorway crashes and casualties..."
Do these people read the annual accident figures that the government publishes every year?
I haven't for a while, but the last I looked (2008/09 report) listed the number of fatalities and critical injuries caused by motor vehicles as less than 10k, that's was I recall about half the figure for fatalities and critical injuries in the home!

People need to stop attacking the motorists, it's not an efficient use of money to look for further safety controls there.

i think it is a great idea going up to 80mph, but really it probably is going to change nothing.
i think 98% of people drive and cruise at ~80mph i know in my particular vehicle it is more economical to cruise at these speeds than 70mph.
i dont know why people have such a big problem on raising speed limit its not the speed that kills it is the below average skill of drivers he use these roads.
i do think that the government should set up extra tests or motorway specific lessons to help discipline and educate drivers for motorway driving
roll on the 80mph limit changes smile

Fuel costs will be the problem of the motorist not the country
Fuel usage will increase and thus the government will earn more revenue
You are not forced to drive at 80mph
I once drove at 80mph, the car felt stable, I didn't crash.

BRAKE will see this thread and ignore it as we are pro-car and therefore our opinions don't count frown

So many things that could be said as most points above!

Simply i would say, i would seriously hope the government doesnt back down on this giving the doom mongers at Brake a swift kick to the goolies!

Go away Brake, leave us alone and stop trying to tell us what we can and cant do! If you dont want to drive at 80, dont, it really is that easy!

Dear Piston Heads editors

or

Piston Head forum member (someone smarter than me and preferably with a law degree)

Can someone please research and write a calculated response to break?

With all points researched and proven?

Then can we spend the rest of the day spamming/posting our response to every social network and MP to ensure that one of the more sensible transport decisions actually happens?
