I don't see the point of this:-

I can totally see the point in that - rwd or 4wd, so you don't need a huge 4wd SUV style thing that will cost a fortune and break down every 10 minutes, and if its rwd you can probably slide it around wet roundabouts (even a dog-slow 14 ton (approx) Hilux Surf would slide the rear end around in the wet), plus it's small and easy to park, higher seat position for better vision, and a nice targa top for the summer, with what looks like a large boot.

If you don't need 4+ seats then it looks like great fun, speed or handling prowess isn't everything that makes a car enjoyable. We had a rental Suzuki Jimny soft-top once which is very similar only with a totally pointless fabric roof and tiny rear seats, and it was great fun.

It could do with bigger bullbars and a couple of rows of spotlights though.

Pointless...weird armoured cars aside, I'd like to think the Alfa Arna is right up there?

The Arna wasn't pointless at all. It was a family hatch built when cars like the VW Golf and Ford Escort were dominating the sales figures. It was also largley based on the Nissan Cherry, a car which sold in vast numbers itself.

The Arna was a failure, but it wasn't pointless.

Agreed my Cherry Europe GTi was a brilliant car with that flat 4 boxer engine. It did keep breaking down though......

Most pointless car of all time?

How mankind has ended up in a situation where a small to average sized parent with a couple of 3 stone children require a 5,000lbs SUV for a 1 mile round trip in the Capital is beyond me.

I got stuck in NW3 the other morning and watched an hour an a half of this ridiculous parade on the school run. No one could move forwards of backwards for an hour and a half. A hoard of Ugg wearing XC90 driving parents chucking foul fumes in everyone elses faces. Why?

And that is before you take into account the huge amount of energy wasted to produce the said goliath vehicle in the first place. The same amount of energy that goes into one of these would propel a normal vehicle for 300,000 miles.

So we allow this to happen whilst complaining about air quality.

And if you think thats bad, try San Fransico and look at the XL Tahoes! Unbelievable and ultimately, completely pointless.

History will not look kindly on all this shenanigans.

In the city, we should all be driving golf carts. The average speed is only 10mph anyway.

Rant over.

Surely we don't need to point out this is all about perceived status and status symbols at least in London.

Also for some reason folks have a perception they are somehow safer because they are high up and in a bulky body, quite incorrectly.

Its what drives the current market through demand, its what people want, thats why Bentley, Lambourghini, Alfa. etc are all producing them - cash cow.

Even out of the metropolis in the countryside these wouldn't make much sense, who would want to drive a 50k plus car down a rough track or across a field or put muddy boots on the passenger wilton.....
