A bit of internet research has confirmed my suspicions that the National Grid will need more than a little upgrading to allow all vehicles to be electric.

Power generation would need to more than double to replace all the road fuel sold in the UK in 2017.
Not likely me thinks.

Matt Prior's column in Autocar last week (?) calculated the UK needs to install 4,300 charging points PER DAY to meet the target for us all to be driving electric cars in time.

Chinny, as it were, reckon.

Grid needs upgrading to support non steady state generation anyway, so not a show stopper. Smart meters are a start.

We have just about enough power, refining oil for petrol and diesel is power hungry. And plugging loads of batteries inti the grid helps. Needs smart meters....

And road pricing to replac fuel duty. Needs smarter cars....

What a load of tosh

No way in hell with this happen In 20 years, 20 years isn’t even reaching the governments ban on fuel only cars!

Plus think any car that’s sold in 2040 will have a life span of at least 15 years. So that takes us to at less 2055, when a lot of people on here will be dead. Il be in my late 60s!

It might just be happening in city’s in major parts of the U.K., but in no single way will autonimus cars be able to Naviagte all the single Track country lanes. In another 50 years maybe but when we can’t even get sat Nav data right I doubt a driverless car will be any good at it

Remember in the 70s they thought we would be flying above the streets in hover cars

I live semi rurally and there are 2 public buses a day - between 9 and 3 so only useful for people wanting to go shopping. Also no pavements or street lights outside the village centre. Unless investment increases I can’t see things changing.

I was at a symposium last week organised by another newspaper. It is amazing how anti-car some people are and where some of them are in government.

They almost all live in city centres and are oblivious to how vast numbers of other people live their lives. In some ways it’s understandable, they walk around where they live and they’re surrounded by smelly buses and diesel cars piloted by idiots who regularly kill people.

However these car haters treat Uber like it’s a transport revolution when it’s just an borderline illegal minicabbing service with a clever smartphone app. There are huge holes in their visions that they simply gloss over when questioned about. They seriously think that someone who lives in a rural community will give up their private car in exchange for an on-demand autonomous taxi service that might take half an hour to arrive. Taxis can achieve this now for little money, do we really hate cabbies that much?

Thankfully once electric vehicles with auto braking systems become the norm in city centres, people will hate them less and the gradually the pathological car haters will become as irrelevant as the communist utopia they desire. These people don’t think about why the personal car has played such a massive role in our society and are blinded by the current issues it creates.

Also thankfully it’s easy to underestimate how many people love their cars, we like to dismiss any muggle with a nice car as a badge poser but there are many people who enjoy driving and a nice car without having the anorak knowledge that we all possess.

Isn't petrol and Diesel by products of crude oil? So if companies wish to processes crude for plastics then they will have barrels of petrol and diesel which they will want to sell....or am i over simplifying this?

I think people hate cars because it is not eco-friendly. As soon as we fully switch to electric cars the situation will change. Although now dispute the ecology of electric machines =)
Most people hate cars not because of the fact that it is a car, but because of the drivers who kill hundreds of people every day.

Wrong. People who hate cars, will hate them whatever the power source.

Correction - people will hate people who have something better, different, the same, whatever. People will find any reason whatsoever to hate other people.

You mention smart meters twice. Explain how they will help mitigate the colossal electricity requirement if the whole driving population was in EVs?

People who hate cars will always hate cars and usually live in areas where there is good public transport. Also their lives are never inconvenienced by a lack of a bus service or rail. They will probably be armchair eco warriors, yet not think twice about taking a plane to go trekking somewhere. No doubt they will have a log burner and forget that it produces inordinate amounts of pollution. Every gadget they have in their house will require electricity generation. Their social circle will revolve around the inside of the bubble they live in.

The real world cannot be seen by them because of the reflection of themselves inside the bubble.

Travel will always have risk, it's probably one of the most dangerous things people do today.
However if you think there will be some kind of perfect risk free travel method then keep smoking the weed.
