Like the emissions of cars are anything approaching a jet on take-off/all the ratty old ground service vehicles servicing the plane...

What utter bks, what's the alternative, pay more to get the train in with the added inconvenience.

So myself and the wife are off on holiday, I'll get our daughter to drop us off in her 03 plate Micra which would need to pay the charge. To avoid the charge we would need to get the Heathrow Express from Paddington.

According to thretrainline.com the average journey time from Guildford to Paddington is 1hr 59 minutes at a cost of £16.80 each, if I want to go in August when we are on holiday, the Heathrow Express takes approx 15 minutes and will cost £14.30 (30 day advance saver), plus I'll need 30 minutes to get to Guildford train station to make sure I don't miss my train.

So with the above in mind and a few more minutes hear and there it will likely take us a minimum of 3 hours to get from my home to Heathrow, at a cost of £62.20 for the both of us plus the added stress of getting trains, or my daughter to could shoot us up the A3 and M25 in 45 minutes and we pay the £15 charge.

A money making scheme pure and simple or am I missing something here?!

Why don't you get your daughter to drop you off at Hatton Cross tube? Or, Osterley, Hounslow East, Hounslow West?

We always either drive to the airport or try and bag a lift, even driving there and parking up for a week is similar in cost to the train journey that I described and far less hassle.

Didn't think of the tube, didn't realise that Hatton Cross is on the door step to Heathrow, maybe for the future.

According to my search of Trainline, £29 return Guildford to Heathrow. Going out August 14th, return August 28th (dates chosen at random).

The answer, surely, is to have a ULEZ-compliant car?

In Mercedes terms, for example, that's pretty much any diesel from around 2012 onwards and any petrol from, say, 2005 on (probably earlier but I just happen to know my previous (2005) large-engined petrol E Class was exempt).

"From 2026, though, when the airport’s third runway opens, the Heathrow ULEZ will change into a “vehicle access charge”, which will affect black cabs, as well as all passenger cars and private hire vehicles."

It's a requirement for them to reduce local air pollution in order to get permission for a third runway.

Heathrow is soon becoming the place not to fly from.

Correct. Nothing to do with money making.

Yes, but the answer is still surely just avoid driving a stinky old diesel or an even older petrol?

Can't see it deterring many people if it's a one off £15 charge, if it's £15 per day ontop of the parking then it may.

Both my cars are ULEZ compliant but even so I just go to Gatwick or Luton instead as they seem to have better transport links from London.

No, as stated it will be an access charge applying to all cars.

So they'll be charging an 'access charge' to a Tesla or Leaf as part of the bargaining to have a third runway? At least I could understand it only applying to non-BEV's, but ALL cars? That IS a money making scheme.

Maybe from SW London. That's what I got charged by Uber going to LHR. Coming back was £45.

Guildford, there is that little train that runs to Gatwick via Redhill but then the only time I needed it for a flight, they were on strike.

Public transport and cabs suck big time.
