France warns Renault could disappear
Discussion
My father-in-law had 2 from-new Qashqais, no end of problems with the Renault-based mechanical parts within the first 3-year period including a new engine in one as far as I can recall. Nissans used to be properly made and hugely reliable , sadly Renault parts have dragged them down. He's now bought a Lexus, who in my experience of them do everything properly - properly made cars and superb dealers.
Quite why anyone would actually spend their own money a normal (non-sporting) Renault is beyond me.

I had a Renault 21 Turbo new, kept it 3 yrs ,all over UK & chipped to 245 no problems apart from someone nicking one of the sideskirts?
Had various Renault vans most at the same time Traffic 2.0D lovely, Masters Mk1 2.5 D Hi top & mk2 2.8TD hi top no problems at all, in fact the last 2.8 we had for 4 yrs & sold it for the same price we paid .
many other vans Iveco's rust, mercedes 411 rubbish Fuel consumption plus bad gearing, Ford transits wheel arch used to hamper pallet loading at that time( before front wheel drive ford vans) plus at night bit of a load & the headlights were like search lights in the Blitz!
Leylad Daf ...ell less said the better, screaming before you got to the top of the slip road...I was very happy with the renaults....My wifes old Renault Megane 130 Diesel estate is a complete joke, engine good ,every thing else is made of Butter, terrible & not especially good MPG ...something has gone wrong along the years?

I'm not totally against Renaults. I'd say they do well on dynamics (engine response & suspension ride control), cosmetics & gimmicks.
They are not so good at economics (reliability), ergonomics or mechanics (quality / reliability again).
Which makes it odd that they are struggling, because the general car buying public are normally taken in by skin-deep quality.

The alliance between Renault and Nissan seems to have taken the worst traits of each partner and blended them into a range of troublesome, uninspiring, bland cars.
Look at the Micra, once the byword for indestructibility, it was turned into a timing chain destroying embarrassment.
Ironic that traditionally easy to work on Nissans that hardly ever needed working on were changed into needlessly awkward heaps without any Gallic design flair to compensate.
Renault deserves to die, the world does not need their nasty, bland, unreliable product.

I like to think I will be able to buy a Nissan with a bit less French engineering now.

Exactly this, 2 companies that had distinctive different appeal to buyers. Now neither of the brands cars appeal to the majority of either customer base. Mainly ugly cars of dubious reliability. The only decent cars for a while have been the Renaultsport models and they are all being culled because of the French car tax laws.Look at the Micra, once the byword for indestructibility, it was turned into a timing chain destroying embarrassment.

Out of the experience of 3 Renaults in my life I have few good opinions unfortunately. The first was a Laguna. Was great when it worked but had endless issues. There was a space of a month where it would go to a garage and not make it home 3 times with new issues. 2 of my friends have 2016/2017 Clios. They're nice enough to sit in I suppose but the infotainment is criminally slow. You're talking a good 0.5-1 second per touch for a response and then loading whatever it is you want it to load. this wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact it has sat nav and the radio in it so it gets used frequently. I don't live with the cars so maybe you get used to it but when I was sat waiting to pick up my friends Clio from the dealer (6 hours we were there!!) I sat in a brand new Renault Koleos which had exactly the same rubbish infotainment system.
What happens to Dacia if Renault go under? They're a growing brand owned by Renault aren't they?

Sadly this dilution of their basic, original attractions, morphing both storied marques into grey uninspiring stboxes, deserves an ignominious end. Sorry and all that.Look at the Micra, once the byword for indestructibility, it was turned into a timing chain destroying embarrassment.

Here in the UAE renault is actually quite popular compared to the UK, although there is no Dacia so the Sandero is actually a renault Sandero, theres the Symbol, then bigger ones like the koleos.
The issue for me with renault is their aftersales, we had a Clio, it wouldn't start in the morning, battery was dead, jump starting it would be fine. Renault had it 3 days and confirmed there was no issue, come and collect your car.
I went with my dad, 'collected' the car and parked it outside the dealership, went down for 8:30ish the next morning and asked them to go outside and show me it starting, funnily enough they admitted there was an issue then.
I like Renault's, but theyve had years of basic issues that they cant fix properly.

I think you're right, that a lot of the problems stem from the dealers or the culture they have to keep. The issue for me with renault is their aftersales, we had a Clio, it wouldn't start in the morning, battery was dead, jump starting it would be fine. But the build quality isn't up to good standards on the mechanics or electrics either.
Body quality and cosmetics / gimmicks are quite good too.
