I'm on my 3rd starter since that body off rebuild. New one fitted this year which Jason (str8six) says is much better than the rubbish tvr parts was supplying that I've had issues with before.

At over £300 a pop that's a lot of money on starter motors

If I have to I'll take mine to Sahibs as they have a good reputation and they are local to me

That frustrated me when I paid over £300 for the starter motor on mine and it only lasted a year before it started playing up. So I went the cheaper route after that and purchased the clutch part myself for around £50 and I fitted it myself.

It is a bit of a pig to squeeze the starter motor through a gap that doesn't look big enough, but I got there in the end and it lasted longer than the new one I'd had put in.

two from TVR parts lasted just over a years use, the last one just spun and wouldn't engage. The latest is from Str8Six, Jason says he uses a different one. Triton (not TVR supplied) on the invoice...

So that £1k on starters in 5 years.... (off road for paint and engine rebuild)

That is some money on starters for sure!

Mine was fitted by Jason as well, but I can't remember if it was a Triton one or not.

It's not a Triton unless you fitted a shower rather than a starter

I fitted a new clutch about a year ago, and it engages perfectly now

However, it still suffers from heat soak

So I've ordered a new solenoid as well

Hopefully that will mean I don't have to pretend I have Stop-Start and manually switch off the ignition each time the car is stationary

Although come to think of it, I may continue to do the manual Stop-Start since fuel is going to be over £2 per L by the time I get to drive it again

I was certain that I needed a new starter last summer - it would always pause cranking when hot but would normally start on the second push of the button.

While trying to figure out some other issue, I put in a new battery and the hot start issue went away :-)

Easiest job I’ve ever had to do on the Cerb ;-)

1mm shim can help with the hot start. Picking some up tomorrow from the laser cutters.

Much nicer design than the OEM

I decided to use a little silicone RTV to stick the shim to the starter motor, makes fitting the starter much easier

Not just hot starts either .. I fitted a WOSP starter to a customer car which screeched occasionally on cold starts, fitting a 1mm shim appears to have cured that completely.

Hi everyone,
Just out of curiosity, has anyone fitted a new starting motor lately? I fitted a Wosp starter back in January 2020 and it has just started the occasional screech while not engaging and on times works with no issues.
Tried varying thickness of shims but still the odd screech, I tried buying the drive assembly kit and bits but they seem to be no longer available.
I went looking for an alternative and came across this. yikes

If I say I can’t be bothered messing about anymore and decide a new starter is the way to go, is this my only option or where do I look.

Cheers and happy mothers day
