I have some inheritance coming through and would like to spend some of it on a watch.

Been looking into 60s Omegas and Zeniths. Some nice gold dress watches around the 300-500 mark that look great value.

Anything else I should be looking at?

At that price point I would say the Omega, especially if you intend to sell it at some point. Longines also worth considering, but I would avoid the automatics as they can be costly to repair.

Thanks for your input.

Won’t be sold, so resale not an issue.

I already have a modern Longines, only reason I didn’t consider them.

After inheriting it from my Granddad, One of my daily wears is a 1970's Omega Geneve, I'm more than a little fond of it - should be within your budget (although I do realize its potentially a little newer than what you may be looking for).

I have a 60's Omega Chronostop which is very period in its design. A bit of a search should find one around the top end of your budget.

I have my wife’s grandfather’s Omega Deville.

It’s ‘only’ a quartz but is in lovely condition, keeps excellent time and is a nice compliment to my other chunkier watches.

It’s a 1981-ish model.

Thanks guys, liked all of those models.

Something like this would be lovely:

Seiko were making some world leading watches at the time. There's not as many gold ones around but what about a 36'000 bph King Seiko:

Take a look at the JLC memovox. I picked up a mint, gold plated example on ebay about three years ago for £700. They are out there, but you'll have to be patient. It's over your budget, but it's also a step above the watches you've been looking at. Most of the examples are branded LeCoultre. It's the same watch, sold in the American market rather than in Europe.

First generation Omega Dynamics (with the bullseye dial) are goregous - unless they've been redialled, which sadly many have.
You might like to look at a vintage Tudor.
Cheaper, almost unknown and therefore excellent value are Garrard and Enicar. Ssshhh.

Chrono24 is good, but a lot of the stuff on there is overpriced.

Whatever you like the look of, ask for advice before you purchase. There are an awful lot of bad watches out there tarted up to look great. All collectors get bitten occasionally, we try to learn from the experience. Can't guarantee to help you avoid every dodgy watch, but I'm happy to try to help you avoid some of the more blatant examples.

Thanks guys.

I'll report back when I find something I like the look of.

The JLC is nice, but I feel I would be better picking up an Omega in nicer condition, rather than stretching.

Seems these 2 are pretty much the same. Is it worth the gamble going private, for a fairly big saving?

Nice.

Made an offer on the Omega above from the private seller.

Hmmn.

I think that movement has had a lot of work. The bridge with the large omega is a totally different colour to the rest of the watch. There's a swan neck adjuster on the regulator, but no compensation weights on the balance. Could be my lack of experience, it just looks odd, seek advice on the vintage forum at Watchuseek.

Thanks Mike, appreciate your input.

It seems all the cal. 1030 I looked at were the same. Not the best quality photos though, I admit.

From my understanding it's not the most revered movement, but the watch looks good value all things considered.

Can't beat a nice vintage Zenith, cracking quality, without the Omega name tax.

You need to pop off the back and get the model number stamped inside.
You'll also get the movement .

If it doesn't say Seamaster it'll be a Geneve dress watch.

Take a look on here once you have the number (or if you feel lucky browse them all).

Thanks Kiwi, i think it's a Tresor by the the looks of things, 1956-59

Very close to the Seamaster and Geneve which seem to be more popular
