Hi All,
My local private exhaust fabricator has tried to weld my cracked manifolds. He is having problems when the weld cools down and another crack appears (alongside or off at an angle)! He has tried various options - mig/ tig/ cold welds etc without success. He has thought of maybe heating them up in a large oven first? Any ideas anyone?
Otherwise another set needs to be bought - I would prefer a used set if possible and I am testing the water on here first.
Thanks.

As you might imagine, I've had to weld up a lot of manifolds over the years, but I can't say I've ever come across what your welder is experiencing! Did he not offer any explanation as to why it might be happening?

Maybe one of the gifted fabricators on here might be able to offer a reason, and possible solution, but it sounds very unusual. You normally weld up the crack and it's ok for another couple of years until it inevitable cracks somewhere else. But it sounds like it's virtually happening before his very eyes!

Interesting.....
Just spoke to one of the reknowned TVR parts suppliers and the guy stated that a bloke based on The Isle of Man is fabricating exhausts for TVRs. He recommended him and a few of his other customers had bought from this source. I’ve searched Facebook without success. Anybody got any idea who this person is or his contact details?
Thanks

Has he drilled any holes at the ends of the crack? Preheating could work as it should expand everything and then all cool down at the same rate.

I might have a set available. I was going to put them on my rebuild but I think I'm going for ACT performance manifolds. Feel free to email me.

Clives a welder? Never knew that
I've been over to his events on the island a few times. Top bloke.

However - I can vouch for the ACT manifolds, sorted all my issues out.

Not sure if this is a whoosh-parrot moment but where have you been the last 10 years hehe

www.kitsandclassics.co.uk home page picture is clive's manifolds. pretty much everything that he's produced has been tested on my dyno .. anything that didn't work wasn't sold, so you can be sure that if Clive makes it and sells it, then it's a worthwhile addition.

Hi Wolvesboy

A friend of mine has a fully reconditioned, standard set of 4.5 exhaust manifolds.

They have been shot blasted and been treated with cera-cote and better than brand new.

They are up for sale here at £450

https://www.facebook.com/groups/tvrbuysellswap/per...

I can put you in touch with him if you don't do FB

Regards

Simon

Yay - the welder/ fabricator managed to weld ‘em up! Apparently he had to have argon gas behind each weld so that it would work! Beats me but I don’t care it worked! He did recommend having an extra exhaust support mount just after the manifold joint as “they will crack again otherwise!”

Thanks for the help anyways folks. Back to refitting the sprayed rocker covers and now ceramic sprayed and wrapped exhausts. Just waiting for some new heat shield material and it should be a lot cooler inside the car.
