That's some difference on the piston ring prices!
As I'm in the process of a refresh, I'll give TVR parts a call to see what more I can discover.

Perhaps I'm missing something here but there does seem to be a big discrepancy in the pricing

The only engine I've bought several sets of piston rings is the Suprex 599cc, these are roughly £20 per piston, same as the TVR-Parts price for the AJP8
Good to see this...
They were only available from Powers at £29.99+ per piston when I needed them.

I never thought the prices were that bad for building these things, coming from BMW's.. Rings are ~£200 for a set of 8 from TVR. I got mine from Total Seal. They are just generic rings, you buy them to bore size and spec.

Cometic head gaskets for £190 a pair is a good price.

O-rings/bearings etc.. I shopped about they are all generic, cheap and easy to source, apart from the half time bearing which you have to make sure is a metal cage.

If you stick to the usual TVR suppliers there is a premium added of varying degrees.

It depends which angle you come from, if they're scarce then £100/side is a relief. But then a HG for a Jaguar mark 2 built in the 50's is available for £39. So it seems they can be value for money.

But high replacement part prices will just drive more and more of these off the road until they become truly rare and precious as owners will cut corners and fail. Sadly, not everyone is dedicated tvr folk.
If that Jag is straight 6, then many many were made over a long time so quantities come in. Are you comparing like for like? Is that a Cometic HG for a Jag you are comparing it to?

No just just the fact they're decades old and not expensive. There are other examples but it's part of a wider discourse on part prices.

For example, I've just sourced like-for-like all the timing cover bearings and half time bearing. Most are standard SKF bearings. I'll post up the part numbers shortly.

That would be great - many thanks

They are indeed.. Watch the caged ones are metal not composite though..

Decades old but the same designed continued for many decades after! Having dabbled with BMWs I see no price issues if you look in the right places, I thought it was quite a cheap lump to build parts wise! Cranks/pistons on the other hand are pretty tied up source wise, and no one interested in doing 1 offs. I tried many places! They seemed very expensive compared to BMW.

I just checked.. My machining costs were double my parts costs, and I used very expensive piston rings, over priced rod bolts, and even did new valve springs and valves even though mine were basically as new, and purchased some bits as kits from suppliers as a convenience/speed thing.

So below are the list for all bearings in the timing cover and includes half time bearing and the bearing that hold the oil/water shaft into engine block (behind the weird 4 corner bronze plate). They are all INA or SKF, quality bearings and same as original.

2 things to note.

1. The picture with the exposed cage and the one next to it, make sure they're all metal cage and not composite. You only want all metal components. I've marked them in * on the list, as at first they sent composite sealed bearings. The replacements didn't come with a new part number but is easily explained.
2. The picture that shows old and new. It's labelled 2RS and has a seal either side of the needle rollers. You can see how the old one has lost the seals and happily slides up and down.
