I believe we are (have entered) into another era. Conspicuous consumption is over and with the end of City bonuses and the introduction of a 45% tax rate I think that people will eventually discover that money is harder to make and that is has to last longer. 30 years ago cars like Bentley, Rolls Royce and even Porsche were relatively expensive and hence only for the few. Today these cars have become (relatively) affordable. Through the introduction of finance offers this trend has been increased. Try to compare the price of a Porsche to the price of the average London flat and you will see that cars have become more affordable whilst living expenses have gone up dramatically. Loosing 50 -75k in depreciation on a car becomes a financial nonsense as it is much harder to make that money in the first place with low interest rates and high taxes and less "easy money". Also there has been a lot more supply into the 100k - 150k car market and what we are seeing now is that we are at the tipping point where there simply is no longer a market for these cars in Europe and unless manufacturers scale back dramatically we will see oversupply killing residuals for a long time to come.
Well said. I remember seeing the new sales invoice for a 1994 Diablo VT. It was £150k in 1994. Alot of money back then.

the colour on that car is too red, undesirable to potential buyers and has lessened the resale value

Thanks c-b. I have been lucky enough to stumble over a couple of nice cars. I would very much like to add a 911 2.7 RS to the stable at some point but there are not a lot around.

Back in September I was choosing what car to buy next, and found myself very tempted indeed by an MP4-12C. McLaren London were extremely helpful, and offered me a brand-new, unregistered model form their show room for barely over 185k - a steep saving over list, and really quite a bargain considering the same car today lists for 205k. I very nearly bought it (had they taken off 1k etra it would have been a deal), but as this was their final price I went for a Porsche instead (I know - not the same league, but hey). Astonishingly, *the same show room car* is still available from McLaren London almost four months later! Heaven knows at what price you can pick it up today, and yet it remains unsold. No wonder the second-hand MP4s aren't selling when they can't even sell new ones at steep discount! I've been following the classifieds, and most of the cars that were available in the summer still are for sale today, just 10-20k cheaper.
I don't understand why nobody seems to want to buy a McLaren - but what seems clear is that if you do buy one, expect to have to wait a looooooong time and swallow a biiiiig price drop before you ever get to sell it on.

Well in fairness I was getting cold feet over the residuals as well. However on one crucial phone call I was ready to say "yes" had they taken off another grand, but when that didn't materialize I decided to cool off for a weekend - and on the Moday I went for a "sensible" (read: bargain by comparison) Porsche instead. I still look at the MP4 wistfully though...

I've read the thread out of interest, not being one who can afford the asking price I hadn't considered the position of supercar owners on the acceptable levels of deprecation.

Firstly are you guys who post on PH representative of the core buyers of new cars for the big 3?

If so it seems that prices must of hit a ceiling of what manufactures believe they can get away with charging. So if news cars aren't selling will we see shorter jumps in terms of tech advancement to keep the costs below say £200k? Is this even the problem? Does it mater what a car starts at, second hand buyers expect to see say a 30% drop, so you'll always have the cost of new adoption at such a high level.

My fun cars usually lose me 6k over 2 years (I buy second hand cars from dealers) and that stings but whether or not I was earning another say 100k I couldn't justify such a drop.
