is the F type a supercar?

Along with everyone else it seems. Anyone who thinks the R8 is a supercar is deluded, it's a fast sports car. Supercar it's not. They can be got for modest sums 2nd hand, in the other hand true supercars like the LFA and all the Ferraris I called out previously (some of which are hyper cars) are pretty much out of reach to the vast majority of people.Edited by AC123 on Sunday 15th September 14:01
Wasn't the original post asking about an F-Type? Here we are on the poor R8 and it's classification identity
Interesting thought on supercar definition. I always believed the Miura was the beginning of the term.

Anyhow even the original V8 R8 is a supercar

Although to be fair, there’s enough chips on shoulders going around here that no one will go hungry.

I'm new to this thread and just read all 13 pages and found it amusing at how much passion there is to supercar exclusivity. There are plenty of sports cars like the F-type that can easily perform as well or better than cars considered to be supercars. So there is something besides performance or even exclusivity that makes a supercar at least for me. Many of the cars discussed in this thread may indeed be supercars, but I wouldn't want to own them no matter what they're called. Take the Lexus LFA, it could outperform any other car in the world and I wouldn't own it because (like all other Lexus products) it's just so ugly that I couldn't look at it. I'd drive an F-type coupe a thousand times before I'd own an LFA. I own a '72 De Tomaso Pantera, a car I think most people looking at it would consider a supercar because it fits the archetype of what most have come to consider a supercar with properties like low slung looks, loud exhaust, rare, sensuous yet aggressive stance. I hardly think performance enters most people's minds when they see such cars. They just look at them, and in a glance have made up their minds as to whether or not it's a supercar. I love the F-type, and I believe if it were lower and flatter it might have been considered a supercar in case the OP is still reading, instead I think it's a sexy, high performance sports car that can run with many supercars.
Who cares what you call your car so long as it meets your expectations?

I do not own a supercar though I have some sports cars ( Porsches ). However I have driven various versions of the F type , and while it’s a nice car it’s no supercar. Nor is an R8 that shares its body over several engines.
I have driven the Carrera GT which is a supercar in every way. I think the LFA is a bona fife supercar. Very rare, unique engine,, highly specialized and just look at its resale value.
Also the best sounding engine I have heard on a road car. Have only seen one in Vancouver and the wail of the thing was spine tingling.

I agree with you. The F type could easily run with either of my Ferrari and it was prettier than both. But somehow it was never as "special". But then that was the story with its predecessor - the E type.Gassing Station | Supercar General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
