Only one year old and several rust spots! Not impressive!

That's very odd and not something you'd expect.

I didn't imagine they would be using steel in their body work. Assumed aluminium, plastics and carbon.

Wax won't fix that.

Needs to be repaired under warranty!

Wax can help prevent it though, which is I'm sure is what he meant.

That's really not good.

Perhaps a problem with the finishing on your particular car.

Have Mclaren seen it yet?

I've had the front wings of my 12c changed under warranty due to corrosion and a few others with 650s I know about too. Just point it out to the dealership when you're next in, shouldn't I think be an issue.

Aluminium oxidization on car bodies (especially after such a short time) is likely the result of contamination during the painting process. No wax is going to prevent that.

Off to Mclaren for warranty repair.

My Aston suffered from this too.

Never you mind

That's very comforting to know so long as you are in warranty, but I doubt they will extend that to any poor owners who don't have one.

that happened long ago when the car was still under the original warranty tongue out afaik these things tend to happen quite quickly and get picked up by the first or second year service.

I'll have a look tonight to see what the warranty actually is for such corrosion.

There's nothing specific on the UK website that I can see but in the US you get 3 years paint warranty with an additional 5 years (8 years in total) anti-corrosion warranty.

So provided the corrosion isn't due to paint chips which haven't been touched-in or accident damage, this aluminium oxide corrosion 'should' be covered.

R8 bonnets were notorious for doing exactly the same thing. Little bubbles around the edges under the paint.

1 year old car showing rust... I would go mental! Had one of my cars repainted 3 years ago by a local guy, paint still look like new. Who do they employ to paint their cars????

Yes, mine has this, right under the Audi logo on the front. Previous owner filled it, hardly notice unless up close however she’s 9 years old not 1!

That's shocking for a brandnew car.

It is likely caused by contamination (dirty) or underbaking (wet) of the aluminium panels in the painting process.

Defo should get a full 100% respray, for free, under warranty.

And then get shot of it, in case the bubbling returns.

I thought that a McLaren was all carbon fibre. Certainly it isnt rust - only steel rusts. If the panel is carbon fibre then the issue is likely to be osmosis of the FRP under the paint and if you prick one of the bubbles some fluid should come out smelling of vinegar. If the panel is aluminium then underneath the paint you will find a white powdery deposit.

Either way, either the wing need replacing or stripping and repainting. Afterwards I'd be inclined to apply ssome of that plastic film paint protector since the cause is likely to be road grit damage

Nope, for the standard production cars there are no cf panels unless you fork out for stuff like front wings/bonnet etc, only the chassis is cf. panels are aluminium or fibreglass. The P1 and the rear half of the 675s are cf body panels though fwiw.
