Purposefully took the front plate off my car today leaving the holder in place specifically to test if the Sainsbury’s ANPR sign would flash up with end of free parking if it couldn’t read a plate.

Was stuck behind a Police car for the journey there and wasn’t pulled.

FYI - Sainsbury’s don’t read the rear number plate on entry (only on exit) so if you don’t have a front plate you can stay as long as you like.
FFS did you really go to that length ? But I suppose as Tesco's say "Every penny counts"

So did you need assistance on getting out of the car park? That is, some car park Read front plate for entry and exit, so without a plate the barrier won’t open ?
There’s no barrier. Just a sign that flashes up with your reg and expiry time - she wanted to put tape over the number plate to hide the letters but I didn't think that was a good idea. There’s only 2 cameras. Both point the same way reading front plate on entry and rear plate on exit.

Sad I know but the wife wanted to see if it flashes up with a time and no plate or nothing at all. The actual parking was free, there's just a time limit which is managed by the sign at the front and ANPR cameras.

Meanwhile in Wales :

I drive to Wales regularly so may just put the plate on the dash board for the boyos- I’m assuming no one has issues with it on the dash board ?
Read my post above. I was nicked in Wales in my M4 with the plate on the dash. So was a friend who had an undersized plate.

Because it wasn’t fixed? Rather than the location on the windscreen rather than bumper?

£10 made and put on from a sign design company , still had one pull saying it’s not strictly legal as no reflective behind the letters, however would really like to take off in full but I don’t think it’s looks half bad to start with

Looks good to me but the front of the lambo adventador s doesnt allow for this as the curves are too deep.

It's your car, but again "not strictly legal" to me makes it seem like a waste of time. The fine is the same if you get a sufficiently motivated cop (or if you go to Wales from the sounds of it) whether you have no plate or one that is "not strictly legal".

For my money it spoils the front of your car, which plates on cars that clearly have no designed spot to fit them sadly do. I'd personally rather just run the risk of not bothering with a plate on the front than trying to comply with the spirit of the Law, making my car look worse anyway, and getting the same fine regardless.

For what it's worth - I'm not suggesting that supercar owners have a "right" not to fit a front plate to their car, only that on cars that clearly weren't designed with a space for them that I'd rather not spoil the lines of the car by fitting one, and run the gauntlet of potential fines instead (which I would fully accept as the penalty for that way of thinking).

Hi

You could always try having a 12x3 inch plate on the front, small enough not to effect the look of the car. Though you will need a flat part of the car to add it to. Try myshowplates.com they do tons of different sizes online. If not a local sign maker could knock something up with a magnetic backing which would be more flexible.

Hope this helps

Having a small plate is worse imo than having no plate at all because it shows that you know you should have one but are actively disregarding the rules about the legal size for them. Plus they look universally terrible.

At least with no plate at all, and no obvious place to put one, you could at least try and plead ignorance if you got pulled. There is every chance you'll still get fined - ala that Wales news piece - but by and large you ought to be fine.

I run with a small front plate. Whilst you're right about the punishment and legality, I think having a plate on the front (albeit a small one) means I'm less likely to get pulled than if I was running without a plate at all. Whether they look 'universally terrible' is subjective.

I noticed at the Revival that a lot of the street legal cars that were racing - GT40s, E Types etc etc had front number plates (always the stick on type). If it's good enough for them...…...

I'm a touch late to this party and you're not going to like me very much...however I'm a copper and if I'm not busy dealing with something else I always stop vehicles committing an offence (including VRM offences (and it's not always supercars)).

Putting your plate in the window and telling me that it fell off doesn't cut it, everyone says that. I generally deal with the matter by issuing a VDRS ticket (vehicle defect rectification scheme) which forces a driver to rectify the problem with no fine involved, however should they fail to comply then it's a fine or summons to court. If I catch the same driver again doing the same thing then it's an immediate summons.

The law applies to everyone!

Without meaning to start a row... is
It actually worth stopping the odd supercar without a plate/with a smaller plate? It just seems a bit of a waste of time because it’s such a non crime. Just wondering and not trying to be rude.
