Welsh 500 - suggestions please
Discussion
Last autumn, with some guidance from my Scottish workmates, we completed an alternative Scottish 500, leaving from and returning to Aberdeen. Fantastic roads and scenery, some of which I posted in another thread, ‘Why I love my Huracan’
Anyway I would like to plan a similar trip this year based in Wales, departing Wrexham area. 500 miles or thereabouts, 3 days, 2 overnight scenic and comfortable stopovers and of course excellent driving roads, but coupled with great scenery.
The [North] Welsh police seem to have a bit of a reputation for being less than supercar friendly so any hotspots to avoid would also be helpful. Huracan and AM DBS, one with lift, one without, so nothing too ‘off road’ please.
Over to the PH community for your recommendations of roads and hotels please, plus any other guidance you may have.
Many thanks in anticipation.
Cheers

Have you got a route you could send me for your Scottish alternative 500 ?
Cant help with Wales as I'm not familiar enough with it, but will follow this thread with interest. I too often have a destination in Wales in mind and just end up driving there via the M4 or the A5. On the odd occasion I don't, I end up going through the middle and the roads are bloody amazing.

We've done 3 welsh tours over the last two years...…The local knowledge who organises it isn't on here...At least I don't think he is.
PM me and I will forward the routes. I think I still have them. Mainly centred on mid-Wales, Brecon Beacons etc......Some are single track but many of them are unforgettable.

Hi. I have just done 580 miles ending and starting in Preston area driving a 190SL round Wales. Great roads and scenery.
Motor way to south of Chester. A483 then A5 then A494 to Bala. Stayed Pale Hotel near Bala 2 nights. Then A470 and small roads across to Harlech Castle through Snowdonia area (worth a look for sure) then A496 back to Dollgelau then reaching A487 drive south past Aberystwyth and down A40 near to Slebech Hall (overnight). Back onto A40 east then right up A843 back to Chester before motor way home. Stunning roads stunning views very few speed bumps and can’t remember any potholes. Doing Scottish 500 in August but not sure what car yet.

Having just done the NW500 (Plus a few very narrow, curvy, slightly bumpy and rather quick diversions) I would not take a car with low ground clearance, we past a few 'tasty' car groups, they didn't have the smiles on their faces we had...Motor way to south of Chester. Sports Car Hire in Shrewsbury have some good road suggestions on their website that you might be able to link together into a route.
If you are looking for a foodie desitination for one of the nights, Ynyshir is a restaurant with rooms (admittedly not cheap) that is well worth a visit - located in Eglwys Fach just outside the south-west edge of the Snowdonia national park near Machynlleth. Recent reviews from Grace Dent in the Guardian and The Telegraph.
You could also hit another Michelin Star at The Checkers in Montgomery, another restaurant with rooms that I would recommend for more traditional French cuisine, but that's a bit further afield from your Wrexham start point.

I'm setting off up to the highlands on Saturday from Leeds, the plan was initially to do the highlands 500 but too many arguments on which route to take have meant we're pretty much aiming to get to john o'groats by the 3rd day and home on the 6th/7th
any suggestions of stuff we really should see?

Thanks Kewy. I have just treated myself to an AA super scale road atlas for the princely sum of £3.50 to help put all of this together.
No problem mate.I found that Google Maps is good for looking for 'twisty' roads and then street viewing them to see what they're like – then if you want to drive that road its probably easier to mark it on your AA map

Thanks for the heads up Phoenixuk. Was going to be this same car, 550 Barchetta or DB6. All reasonable ground clearance. Can’t wait. Gassing Station | Supercar General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
