I couldn’t agree more. Although I love my ‘toys’ to be fair that’s all they are. If they all had to go back tomorrow it wouldn’t really bother me that much. You should be able to have a fulfilled and joyful life without spending £100,000’s on baubles... these things are just the icing on the cake; a little reward to oneself. I would hope that it would be last thing you’d be thinking off on your deathbed. The idea that you should be blasé or gung-hung re depreciation doesn't sit well with me. The long-term financial well-being of my family override any quick fix from a car. Hence, for me being savvy and prudent in timing your purchases is understandable when you are talking about non essential toys. God I sound such as misery! Must add that I felt differently when I was 27 and not today’s 47!
Exactly where i'm at. Good post. The journey is always greater than the arrival and buying emotionally and normally with a credit agreement comes at a cost. I haven't been able to stomach buying a depreciating toy on finance for quite a number of years now.

I paid way over double that for my 650S and loved every mile of it, why wait? At 100K that's the best Supercar experience you can possibly get. If it drops another 10K in 6 months all you've achieved is missing out on 6 months of driving it. Sure you've saved ten grand but hey, if you wait another 6 months longer you could save another ten grand. It's the sensible thing to do right?

But Death awaits.

Seriously though, Death is just rubbing his hands together and hoping you'll waste the precious and finite time you have left putting off everything you really want to do. When you're dragging in those last few breaths on your deathbed you're certain to say "I'm so glad I saved that 10 grand which made me about seventy pence compound interest. I mean, I could have been thrashing that insanely enjoyable Supercar around the lanes on a Sunday morning laughing out loud like a lunatic, just before the government made driving for fun illegal"

Think about it.
Fantastic post that fits perfectly with myself.

I have loads kids and yes them and the missus always come first, but i am fortunate enough to have that wee bit left over to spoil myself on something nice.

If the st hit the fan, it would be the 1st thing to go, but until that happens i sure as anything am not going to worry about it 'maybe' happening and deny myself some superficial pleasure on the basis i could save a few quid by waiting, or lose a few quid by buying.

Life is way too short.

I'm kind of counting on life being short.

Having blown most of my money on cars in recent years, I definitely can't afford a long retirement! wink

Well, as an update to this. I'm glad I didn't make an offer on the McLaren

The price has been dropped by an astonishing £15,000 in just 4 weeks!!! 15% of it's asking price - bloody hell.

Now, who wants to catch a falling knife?

2016 McLaren 650S - just 2500 miles from new.

It was £117k a few weeks back when i looked at it - and the sales person indicated they'd be keen to do a deal at the time.

Low and behold - it's now £102k!

Yes. Not overly struck on the interior though. Looking around though and it seems nice specified 650's are way down into the 90's now anyway.

Warranties etc aside, they are starting to look like a lot of car for the money

£117k sounded optimistic to begin with.
£100k is the mark for a 650S and will continue to drop to £70k over the coming years

I’ve followed the car for over a year as it’s failed to sell in a number of independents, a few have marked it as sold for it to only appear in another a few days later. The car was SOR and the price has been up and down like a yo-yo. The lowest it’s been around 4 to 6 months ago was 106k it then went back up to around 125k then
down to 117k then down to 103k. At one point it was even on eBay around 115k but that was close to a year ago from memory. Two out of the 4 or 5 independents who have failed to sell the car have lowered then hiked the price back up which at first I thought was odd but I guess they do it to try and catch someone who think they have just scooped a bargain.

When I was 106k a number of months ago I made a cheeky offer on the car as it was due a service and was out of a warranty, this was refused as the company selling it said they now own the car and wouldn’t consider selling it for that kind of money. But to be fair it was a offer based on me needed to take a chance on it, service it and then try and get a warranty on it.

Like you say lovely looking car but the interior is not for everyone and the fact that it hasn’t really been used for some time and doesn’t have a Mclaren warranty could make it an expensive buy if you get it wrong.

As I said on another thread I’m not brave enough to buy this car, so if you bid on it you won’t be bidding against me so play the game well.

If you buy it post up some pictures and keep us updated as it looks a beauty to me.

Good luck with your search

The white coupe one with 8k on the clock sold then came back for sale so make sure if you go for that one you invest and get it inspected independently.

There’s a beautiful low mileage coupe for sale at AB and the owners on here. If your interested in that one I’m sure he will happily answer question. I believe it’s only for sale as he traded up to a LT.

Thanks for info. I won't be doing anything until all the market turbulence plays out. At the moment, there are lots of cars coming to market at increasingly lower levels in order to get to the top of the search rankings. One thing is for sure - i'm glad I haven't bought in the last year or so and even more glad i'm not currently trying to sell anything.

Candellara just to let you know you have missed it at 102k, it’s jumped back up in price today to 115k 🤣
