Their customer service was fine but they didn't do an actual car service, just an MOT and a health check which came up 100% perfect. Ricky does my annual service however he gets Swindon Audi to do the MOT so may as well get my MOT done locally.

He got a Milltek but no idea on cost, sorry.

so you prefer Ricky to audi for service ?
you are near me, so how do you get up to Ricky get service done & home as long way ?

I’d always go for a good Indy over a main dealer
Unless you have something incredibly rare where the history is part of its value then why pay more
Waste of money

Just got my Smart in for some warranty work that they’re refusing to cover- failed door lock on 3.5 year old main dealer car under used car warranty. They want £120 diagnostic fee now the repair isn’t covered. Joke. This is my typical main dealer experience, inflexibility around processed and making as much money as possible

Audi are better at this sort of thing IME but still, unnecessarily expensive

Yes, my car's been to Ricky for both my services, again early next year too. I've had a poor experience with a franchise when buying my R8 (they lied through their front teeth on the condition of the car which was picked up on the PPI) and also with dealers (two health checks within 20 miles of each other, two different results and associated costs!).

However must say I got a better feeling from Audi at most recent health check/MOT which seemed consistent and accurate with Ricky's comments of the car in the past. Also you tend not to get a documented health check with some indies so the "MOT at the dealer, service at an indie" arrangement is good for me.

I drive up to Ricky's and coincide it with a shopping trip to the outlet centre or friends with the fiancee. Last two times it's involved two trips (there and back) so might see if I can wangle it in a day trip next year although depends if I want any other work doing.

Every time without doubt. More conscientious and knowledgeable also cheaper.

I'd have used Ricky but he's a 5 hr drive away. Audi were pretty damn good to be honest I had to wait for the specific R8 technician and they loaned me a brand new Audi estate for 2 days. Price was bang on quote for 2 yr plus brake fluid at £768. Plugs would have bumped it upto 1k with air filters but previous owner had them done at previous service year before. I asked them not to wash car as it had been detailed and my tracker showed they didn't thrash the balls of it on the test drive :-)

Not that I have an R8 yet... but future servicing location is a consideration. Ricky is a fair way from me.
Anyone got any experience of these:

Backdraft at Milton Keynes would be nearest to get to for me. I remember them from when they raced a TT and then a Gallardo (I think) in Britcar)

update guys …….
got my 2008 , auto , 23k miles new / 1 owner / full Audi 1 dealer s/h , its atlas grey / grey leather ..
I listened to some advice from you guys ,so I spent more than I wanted to get this one £34k , didn't get it checked as hoping from the above details that should be good , as looks mint to me , even engine bay polished , got it from really nice guy so fingers crossed , drove it home 250 miles & lovey , gearbox that I have been told avoid was great , you can use gearstick or paddles for a bit more control but auto was good (couple of jerky shifts but you not seen my manual changes ha ha ) and no heavy clutch foot in the traffic ,its completely standard & I know that they sound a bit muted for a lovely engine, so I have got a new exhaust to go on this week ….
have a few questions guys that I should have checked but never !!!!!!
Have all the cars got mag ride suspension ?
there seems to be a slight clonking on front right when I go over pot holes so this is being looked at (don't know if its the dreaded mag ride if I have it ?)
what are good extras to have on these or are they all the same ???
I have carbon blades & carbon engine bay / full grey leather seats / sat nav / parking sensors / electric seats .
Is that just standard ?
Also where car low mileage, the guy seems to get serviced every year regardless of miles ? is that normal?
will put some pics up later in week as car gone straight to garage for exhaust & clonking

Congrats.

Mag ride was optional on the V8, standard on the V10 - if you have it there is a button to firm it up near the gear stick - no button = no mag ride

Clonking could be the mag ride bottoming out - if so, it needs to be done ASAP - £1k a corner from Audi I believe.

Not all the same although some kit standard. Good extras on the v8 were the lighting illuminating the engine bay, reversing camera and B&O sound system.

Carbon was not standard on the v8 so optional

Annual servicing - up to you but I consider it a good idea on such a car. I do 3,000 miles PA and get mine services every 12-15 months.

Hope the lack of an inspection doesn't bite you on the arse!

Congrats on the purchase. On the R-Tronic I heard that a TCU tune makes a big difference on the Gen 1 and it is now fairly reasonable in terms of cost to get installed.

If you have the shock 'firm up' button then yes it has Magride, if not then you have standard shocks. I recall its the last button on the left below the gearstick.

If you do have magride, the symptoms you describe does sound like a leaky shock so best to get it checked asap. They are not cheap to replace.

Make sure you check that the aircon is working well. If not it could be a simple top up, or worst case a failed compressor which I understand is a very labour intensive job to sort.

On the Audi Dealer experience, I have a Audi healthcheck from two different dealers around 2 months apart. 1 gave me a full green light result, the other gave me what looked liked a christmas tree of reds, yellows and green's. So my experience of Audi dealer healthchecks/PPI's is somewhat disappointing.

thanks ,
it has B& O and mag ride , will check the light for engine bay , do you switch it on or is it on all the time ?
no camera (so looks like that is the only extra its not got !)
yes hopefully no biting , but the shock is bit of a pain , not very good to go after 23k miles, maybe something else but he's checking this week ….
I see a lot of people change mag ride to coil overs , perhaps this is the way to go if it is that ?

yes its got mag (hopefully not that that clonking !)
don't fancy sitting out there checking air con ha ha (that is only way to check I suppose ?)
yes I must admit , I don't like the main dealers but people like it , so because its got full audi , I will have to take mine but pompeyreece (posting above ) has said the porstmouth branch near me ok , so will see ?
what is the gearbox tcu tune then ?

Engine bay lights come on when you lock/unlock the car. They are on a timer the same as the interior lights.

My mag rides failed at around the same miles as your car and I also had a rear suspension ball joint go at around the same time. Both made knocking noises so could be either.

ok will check lights as quite cool ….
bad really failing at that miles , did you get your shock fixed or replace lot with coil overs ? bit worried if it is 1 , the rest are going to be on there way soon ?
as anybody on here have the mag ride last a decent mileage , as only here about failures ?

I swapped mine for the passive ones fitted to the Plus model. You also need a KW delete module to prevent error messages but even with that the cost is still around half of the magrides and they don't fail prematurely.

did you have 1 go, or all seem about to be on way out ?
what are passive ones ?
I will see what mechanic says as might be lucky , but looking on black side could be £2k to change then ?

As Trev said the lights come on automatically - I think in the menus you can specify how long for. If you have them, look at the engine and the lights are clearly visible on either side of the engine. They come on/off when you lock/unlock the car.

All mag ride failures I've read about are progressive i.e. the oil starts to leak but the shock still works but over time they get worse eventually "bottoming out" which could be the "clunk" you witness. If it got to that stage, you need it sorted now.

Alternatives are coil overs, replacements from Audi (£1k each) or a company in Poland refurbish them with a 1 year warranty for 1/2 that cost. All down to you and how deep your pockets are but I'd say 23k is a good innings for mag ride!
