Currently in the fortunate position of considering buying something special again. Aim is to buy something that I’d own for 5 to 10 years. Will be used as weekend high day car, attending some meets, perhaps very occasional gentle track days and doing some touring. Something that makes passers by smile, not hate. Have other cars for day to day duties and more frequent track use so looking for something genuinely special for this purchase.

Considering the following with my order of preference changing each time I drive one or based on some of the positive and negative dealership experiences I’ve had. Interested to see what the views of the collective wisdom here might be without prejudicing further with my own views

So what do you think? Huracan Performante, 675LT or 991.2 GT3 RS? These all seem to be within 10k to 20k of each other just now. Outside shout might be an earlier RS or ‘just’ a 991.2 GT3 and doing something more sensible with the balance, but you’re a long time dead as they say.

Thanks in advance for your views.

All very different cars, and none will disappoint.

Honestly the best advice is to drive each one and decide for yourself. They are too different in every way that matters to compare.

In order of prices the Performante,675LT and 991.2GT3 RS are respectively £170k, £185k and £200K+...In terms of value and sheer ability i'd get a 675LT..Its the rarest by far, the fastest and the most special IMO..

We have a 675LT Spider and a 997.2 GT3 RS. Very different cars. If you do a lot of road trips, then I would choose the 675LT. There are several articles on both on our site.

McLaren will probably tick the "Something that makes passers by smile, not hate" box.

Porsche is a Porsche so not that special IMHO considering the cash outlay.

Performante wins hands down on theatre & noise although I understand the controls on the steering wheel make it a pain when turning corners/indicating.

Personally I'd go for the Performante first, McLaren next and would drop the Porsche, maybe adding a 720s in it the mix?

I can only speak from my experience as a current Performante owner..

I dont get to drive my cars much unfortunately due to work commitments, however i do give my cars a damn good drive and like a good road trip whenever the opportunity arises. Over the festive period i had a few days and decided to take the Perf down to the Cotswold's (i hadn't driven the car for 4 months, yes i know sacrilege!!). However, upon packing a few bags (yes, two soft bags do fit in the front boot) and getting back into the car I was instantly grinning like an idiot. The Perf is such an aural delight and beautiful steer, I was back in heaven and even enjoying the boring monotony of the M4! The car is so good at cruising (we know it isnt a GT car) and with the comfort seats it really is fine for several hours behind the wheel. The jekyll and Hyde character should be applauded, as you can go from a 50mph cruise in strada to defcon 3 all out attack Corsa mode at the flick of a button and the car becomes an absolute animal!

Based on your criteria for weekend/ high day special car I would certainly recommend the Performante.

Filthy animal!!

How do you find other road users / casual passer-bys treat you in the Perf? That's one of my concerns in potentially getting one.

No problem all very positive, however I wouldn’t leave any of the cars mentioned on a public street overnight imo.

I can't quite aspire to a Perf yet but have a Gallardo SL which is fairly outrageous (but not as much as a P!) and I get nothing but nods and smiles which is great.

I'd have to echo what's been said re. the 675LT being my pick of the three. Yes the McHaters will chirp on about depreciation, but in my view you've let someone else take the biggest hit there. It's a limited, carbon-tubbed supercar with dihedral doors; what's not to like? Yes the Lambo will sound better but for me, the 675 would be the one to go for.

If you want supreme reliability and bullet-proof residuals, take the Porsche. None of that seems to be a consideration for you I'm pleased to see.

For me, it has to be between the Performante and the 675LT.

Plus points for the Perf
- Noise
- N/A V10
- Newer, in warranty. Probably more choice of cars available. Less variation in specification as there weren't that many options on the list.
- More likely to be able to test drive
- 4WD

Plus points for the 675LT
- Steering feel
- More practical (bigger boot)
- More comfortable/better on bumpy roads
- Very spec dependent - massive variation in colours/interiors/seats and MSO options mean that some cars are much more desirable than others.

There isn't a bad car at this level though, one isn't objectively 'better' than the other and so it literally comes down to personal preference.

The only thing with the 675LT is perhaps the 7xxLT perhaps will overshadow it?

As I have not driven any one of them this is not really based on a good foundation, but I would take the 675 - I have been tempted by those on quite a few occasions, but never pulled the trigger (mainly because just a little too expensive for me).

If going Porsche, I would get a 997.2 RS (I know that's not on your list).

lambos get the most hate, porsche will get the least. the general public still seem unsure when they see a mclaren - people I know thought it was a lotus at first

For me, the Mclaren would be a no. Lots of theatre with the Lambo and looking good value. My choice would be the RS proven car with solid residues.

Never had any 'hate' in Lamborghinis, limited 'hate/green eye' I have had has been in Porsche's although never enough to be a decision for buying.

Thanks for all the useful replies. I knew I'd come to the right place for a balanced opinion. I'll share a few of my own thoughts.

Back in the day, pre-kids, I had a 996 Turbo from new. Absolutely fantastic car at the time and I loved every opportunity to drive it. Trip to Le Mans in it will be something I remember and recount forever. The latest GT3 RS is clearly a different beast, but I still have a feeling that I've been there to a certain extent. I'm also not sure that it's special enough given the company it's keeping at over £185K. I don't buy the rock-solid residuals either. Coincidentally nearly walked past a new Speedster in the NEC carpark on Saturday, lovely car, but easy to miss unless you are in the know. I've also got another issue, which is I don't get on with the 918 carbon buckets that most are spec'd with, so would need to get one with the carbon folders, or switch the seats out. How do you tell your wife that you just spent ... on a car and you need to change the seats smile Also have to say that I've been completely underwhelmed by the local OPC. Sorry we can't arrange a test drive, all the cars are sale or return, have you tried the Silverstone experience, etc.

Lamborghini was never something that was particularly on my radar, but a Huracan advert kept coming up on my Instagram feed. In the end, I clicked on it and registered, and I received a call back from the factory in Italy to see if I wanted a test drive. I thought why not, something different to do, and had the chance to drive a Performante on the road. Unexpectedly it was the most excited I'd been about a test drive, I think ever. As some have said above it was the drama and the noise that had me hooked. It was also a pretty good steer, I'd never have known it was 4WD at road speeds. I was pretty hooked. They were then kind enough to get me over to Millbrook to have a run out in the new Evo. Wow, just wow, what a fantastic morning, and even a great lunch. Some other dealers could learn a thing or two about treating their prospective customers. I've got a couple of concerns about the Lambo though, is it too bling for me. Was at Autosport on the weekend and there were so many wrapped or with ridiculous wheels. Absolutely fantastic in their own right, but not my thing. The other is they've made so many and there is a lot of stock sitting around, low miles, just about to be undercut by the new EVO RWD.

Then on to the McLaren. That's been a bit of a dream car for me since it was launched. The 720 is mentioned above, and while its clearly a brilliant car, I've never got on with the styling. Similarly, with the 570s and 600lt, they don't quite do it for me, but I've always loved the looks of the 675. It would therefore be a relatively easy choice if it weren't for the following. The lack of a local dealer hence 200 mile round trip for servicing. Some lingering concerns about reliability, which I'll probably get over. And then the final one which is the differential in price between it and the 650s. I think I can get over that as well as to me its just so much more special. Hopefully the long term market will agree, but whatever I choose I'll be in it for the long haul anyway.

Cheers

I was also at the Milbrooke event (afternoon session) and found the huracan evo very simular to the performante (just a bit muted with the extra sound proofing etc), Regarding your 3 choices I would go after a performante and haggle a fair bit.
I went down a different route and bought an Aventador S as I always wanted the V12, but the huracan perf deserves all the praise it gets.

Regarding reliability on the 675LT, we have done multiple 1000+ mile road trips in ours and never had an issue.

As values were mentioned above - one more addition - imo the RS will lose by far the most over the medium to long term. They built 1000s 991RSs and I just don’t see them as a long term value proposition. My expectation is that in 5 years they will be well below a 997 and a 996 RS.
A lot of the 991 3 RS value is hype atm imo (and even the 2 RS will imo trade well below the 997 version in the long term)
