I was in the same dilemma a few months back, and after some hard thinking and research it had to be the Ferrari F430 Spider and i have no regrets whatsoever. I must add i have little experience in the other cars but for me the Ferrari ticked all the boxes. Ferraris just have that magical aura about them.

A f430 isn’t completely ruled out. It’s still one of my poster wall cars to be honest

Why would you pick an R8 over a Nissan GTR?

If its you poster car its got be an F car. Its your first supercar purchase so take your time they're not going to suddenly all disappear. I have a feeling by June reality will set in and prices will start softening even more. Dealers need a reality check. They're not museums they'e businesses and they need to continue to turn stock. Treading water pointless so better cutting losses and advertising for what people will pay for them. By way of example I'd be offering £80k for cars up at 90-100k! smile

I've been looking at cars in the 80-100k range recently and it's actually quite overwhleming.

lots of the 430s around (esp in the ferrari approved network) have (imo) horrible interiors with the brown/cream leather which is an instant no for me

there's a couple of gen1 gallado sl's around this price worth considering too also a few odd balls like a c63 black series then you've got 599's, FF's etc

there's also a niggling feeling that many cars are going to make their way into the bracket over the next 6 months

I have had the same dilemma for most of last year ,I’ve had a 348 ,355, 360 and a f430
Over the last 10 years , budget for my new car was also around 80-100k

Out of all the Ferraris I kept the 430 for the shortest time, now I was considering another one but I was struggling to justify £90000 on a good one which would spend a lot of the time in the garage ,
In the end after A couple of test drives I ended up buying a 2014 gen 1 facelift Audi R8 v10 Plus .

It had good history but 6 owners and only 18000 miles and I picked it up for £62000, so now I have spare change in the bank and I car I feel fairly happy driving in all weathers smile.
You get attention but not the same extent you get with a Ferrari , which is fine with me now I am approaching 50
The engine sounds fantastic with the Aftermarket exhaust ( I think it’s a Brookes racing exhaust )
And the traction you get with the 4wd is unreal .
Performance wise to me the performance is a step up from the F430 .

In addition, you don't have to be doing silly speeds for the R8 to 'come alive',

For your first supercar, I can't imagine either a Nissan or an Audi would cut the mustard

Slight boy racer image of GT-R is unappealing & soulless drive (in comparison) were my 2 reasons.

Im having a similar dilemma.

I toyed with an R8 but as much as I try to convince myself it is the logical and best choice it just isn’t a special car to me.

I like the Gallardo, but it would have to be an LP and it just looks too dated to me. I love the hurracan, but I don’t want to put that much money into a car again.

I wont touch a Mclaren. Several friends with them and they have had lots of trouble with them. They also dont really do It for me and i cant explain why. I would only consider a 720 but in addition to the troubles, it’s more than I want to spend and drops in value like a brick!

Not tempted by any Porsche. I have owned several and they don’t do anything for me. I’ve learned my lesson and won’t buy another.

The problem is really that im hooked on Ferrari; I’ve had 348ts, 355gtb, 355 spider, 360spider and 458 (all red). There is just something about them; the history, the feel, the sound, etc. Im toying with a F1 430 spider or a Cali. The Cali being a bit newer, having a folding hardtop and being a bit more usable is becoming a stronger possibility. What does everyone think of the two of them compared with each other? I haven’t driven a Cali yet. Is the Cali reasonably reliable?

The only other car that is seriously tempting is an Aston vantage v8s roadster. I had an early v8 roadster and loved it. The s would have a bit more power and the newer version of the sport shift (I don’t like manual gearboxes anymore). More discreet and usable. So a strong possibility if I can pull myself away from Ferrari.

Worst decisions to have to make ...

Wouldn’t consider a GT-R. Great car; amazingly fast and grip beyond expectation, but does not appeal. No “magic” to it (probably why I’m not keen on Porsche either).

Rather than a V8 roadster, the V12 transforms the Vantage into a real hot-rod :- https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...

I could be tempted by a v12 for the sound, but it would probably be wasted on me as I’m not a fast driver. Has to be black though.

If you've had a 458 getting a California or 430 just seems nonsensical. They will be pants in comparison.

My first sport car was a Z3 M Coupe
My first "supercar" was a 355

Both of those bought purely on a heart decision - it is not about speed, reliability or anything like that imo - what counts is what makes your heart beat the fastest when looking at it, when driving it and when sitting there with a beer just talking about it / your last drive-out. Sensible cars that perform better, you can always add later - that first car is special and should give you a sleepless night before picking it up (especially if you saved up to buy it)

All imo and certainly not the financially prudent way to buy cars ...
