They only have a fraction of the overheads compared to a traditional auction house so to expect some due diligence in exchange for the 6% buyers fee is not unreasonable.
I think this is a fair point. I was under the impression, certainly at the outset, that CC had a value proposition over and above a generic auction site. The fact it does not, and that one can't really rely on the description anymore than you could on eBay, puts me off anyway. Whether it puts others off or the market as a whole I have no idea.
I initially also got the impression that cars are being carefully selected and the focus is more on quality, but I figure that will always have to suffer to achieve quantity - still a good source for stuff you can’t easily find via other avenues, but maybe not your primary port of call for cars where there are plenty available on the market
I also thought the concept was about quality and a curated offer, but have you read the description of the Citroen DS that will end today?
I think I wrote that earlier, but I am pretty sure one of the descriptions was copy paste from another car and therefore the text (sth relating to mileage vs condition) just didn't really make a whole lot of sense. I understand that there is only so much variation you can have in descriptions, but still it gave me the impression that nobody looked at (or inquired about) the car in detail and they just want to make it sound good - which ultimately means I will treat the descriptions with even more caution than the ones by a private seller on Pistonheads

A DS that needs repair is still a collectible car. How many classics are running around carrying a few issues? It would be easier to count those that aren’t.

The language in the descriptions is obviously chosen to sugar coat some of the issues that cars have, but the facts are all there. In the case of the DS the seller is not sure what fluid it is. This devalues the car and so buyers bid the amount accordingly. I’m not seeing an issue? And potential buyers have ample time to view the cars before buying.

Edit: But then something like this hot mess comes up for sale. Hmmm.

None of the UK sites is a patch on Bring a Trailer in the US at present. Bring a Trailer is completely transparent and maintains an online archive of every auction (whether the car sold or not) containing the entirety of the bidding and the comments on the car. The real difference between Bring a Trailer and eg CC is the "comment" section. The "comment" section in CC seem to be little more than a recital of placed bids. In the case of Bring a Trailer, reading the comments is like reading a PH marque specific forum thread interspersed with occasional bids. The auction site attracts a very large audience ( 125,000 views and 800+ comments on a Miura last month). The comments invariably include very pertinent and/or helpfully geeky observations from knowledgeable people. Admittedly you have to wade through quite a few simplistic cheerleading comments (but that's just the less bottled up US character showing its appreciation for the excitement of an auction). It is the benefit of a car going under this very public microscope of a large critical audience, rather than any "due diligence" by the auction company, that would persuade me to buy on Bring a Trailer as opposed to CC. Plus, the BaT fee is capped at $5,000 rather than the c.$7,700 of CC. So the chap who bought the very nice Miura for $990k only paid a $5k buyer's premium. Compare that to Bonhams/Sotheby's et al......
I had not looked at BaT for a good few years with it being US based and have just spent an hour browsing it. You are right it is a level above anything else out there and they should really bring it over here. The comments and transparancy make it so much better.
I just listened to Ed Lovett on the Behind the Glass Podcast...he basically said it was the same model as BaT in terms of how the site work which it clearly isn’t. As has been said above and I have realised before BaT has the transparency that CC doesn’t He did say they differ from BaT in wanting interesting rather than just anything. BaT incidentally has just been bought. In fairness to him he made it quite plain that Chris Harris is involved in the business (almost described him as an owner) on a larger level than just doing the Podcast. Which we knew anyway and has been key to the success of it I think. Get the transparency right and they’d be in an incredibly strong position.

He also said CC are currently getting offered 25 cars a day so they’re getting some real momentum.

Wonder what this will make ? It’s currently a long way below where they’ve been advertised recently.
https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/2019-aston-mar...

Funny Ed Lovett on the Podcast he was on recently actually cited one of these as being not the right car for this platform....needs time and a negotiated sale.

Surely this is someone who wants out pronto ?

Was anyone tracking that manual 612? It closed this past Monday but is not in Sold so I wonder if it did not achieve it's floor price?

Was well old - an '05 but it looked decent enough. Last price I saw was early £40s on Saturday afternoon...

Its a rare manual ... depends what the owner thinks its worth or paid for it. It must be frustrating bidding on a car when the reserve is set too high.

The LHD cars I saw were in the 200k region a year ago or so, so probably expected a lot more than this

I was lucky enough this week to win the auction of the red F355 - the car does look in great condition and I’m looking forward to seeing it in the flesh.

I managed to get the polar silver 993 Turbo last month and have been really impressed with it - the car is even better in the flesh than it was in the photos.

Really impressed by Collecting Cars so far.

The Artcurial results weren’t great either for the likes of Ferrari and Porsche. RM Auction does look weak.

I think the Silverstone auction will be poor....a lot of the cars haven’t been used and you would really expect to go to another collector to polish incessantly. Not sure those are the people that are buying right now.
Except the prices achieved at the last Silverstone sale seemed strong to me.
I’d agree with that...that was peak lockdown when people had nothing better to do though. At least that’s my perception.
Another fairly strong set of results from Silverstone Auctions over the weekend, given the circumstances.

What's next on the mid-90s sports/super car collection bucket list?
