Funnily enough, I'd consider a 968 as I owned a 944 (cooking version - 2.5 8v 'Lux') and look back on it as more versatile than my current 997! Give me a pile of dosh left over as well! But my wife would want a bit more of a change, and she was never as impressed with the 944 as I was.

Ferrari 456 is one or two leagues above my Sunday morning kickabout comfort zone unfortunately.

Promise to update you with pictures when I swap, but could be the autumn as will get the summer out of the 911 first. Some great suggestions earlier that I wouldn't have thought of.

Why bonkers? OP wanted a gorgeous true 2+2 with plenty of luggage space of torque. The 928 . and the others, fit that bill. You can get a 928 for £20k and that leaves £20 to make it perfect. They are comfortable, torquey and have loads of space as well as being super gorgeous. The OP didn't mention anything about age but with £20k to spend on making it perfect or £40k on a perfect example the 840 or 928 fit the bill perfectly. The 928 is even a hatchback! Its a genre of car that does not exist any more and should. Anyway he stated a 968 could be possible so there you are.......

There are lots of reasons, but the main one for me would be that none of them would work with E10 fuel. Something everyone with an older car knows is a massive incoming problem.

Now that is bonkers! You can just use super. The gov has committed to keeping super E5 in fact ESSO has committed to having no ethanol in its E5 (its just says E5 on the pump for legal reasons). There are 100,000's of cars on the road that used to run on leaded fuel. Not buying a car because of gov. legislation is bonkers. We would all be in electric cars now if we followed the same logic. There is always a solution if there is a market.

For the last eight years I have owned the best car I have ever owned (among 3 dozen or so),a 5.0 L Jaguar XKR. Out of the box it came with over 500hp and with a $700 pulley and tune (as I did), you have a 600hp barrel of fun. Mine passed 183,000 miles this past weekend, has been utterly reliable, comfortable, enjoyable on the track and on the street, will outrun M6s and AMGs and CAN BE BOUGHT IN THE LOW $20,000 RANGE!!! They haven't been made since 2015, but are still gorgeous, and well maintained ones will run for many more years and miles. The 5.0L supercharged engine is just a jewel of torque and power. While the back seat is usable only for people without legs, it still is technically a 2+2. Have you seen 180,000 mile Gran Turismo that is still able to be driven out on the streets?

Bought an Alfa yet? Superb cars! How many saloons have a chassis developed by the man who is responsible for the 458 Speciale, have a Ferrari engine, and littered with Carbon fibre (even the prop shaft) very special car. And when cruising on motorway will get 35-40mpg. Complete no brainer.

Update: few tweaks to the 997 C2 (OEM engine mounts for comfort, re-webbed seat belts to add some colour to the interior), so now not screamingly urgent. Happy to holiday next summer in it if required.

Replacement now definitely a three horse race:
1) Lexus LC 500 - had a look at one at our local dealer, and will have a test drive. Beautiful well put together car with great reviews - back seat very cramped at first glance though.
2) Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio - nearest Alfa dealer promised to ring me when they have one;
3) 997 Turbo - the “safe” choice - there’s such a superb network of brilliant independents around here for maintenance . . . makes ownership so easy!
