Love the Veryon. It certainly has it's critics, but they seem mainly based around the fact it's built by audi, and it nigh on perfect, and as such just has to be souless, and with no character, (well it just has to be doesn't it. It it well designed, and does exactly what it is meant to do). The fact os that they lumped designers, and engineers in a room, and they emerged with an absolute stunner of a car. Huge power, and seemingly very nimble, and composed whatever the speed. Some will still hate it, and they are entitled to, however in my eyes their reasoning is somewhat flawed. They want faults, and glitches to keep them happy.

Excellent article by Steve and we are all entitled to our own opinions until that can be legislated against. The absolute truth is that until you have driven a Veyron you will never have any true comprehention of its ability and why it really is in a completely different league to anything else that has come before it. Much like the Maca was back in the 90's.
I am fortunate enough to have a number of petrolhead mates that have some very nice toys. I've driven a number of supercars, Diablo, Murcielago, Enzo, passengered in a Zonda F club sport with Pagani's test driver and these all pale into insignificance when you have had the opportunity to have driven the Bugatti Veyron on the road which I did at the end of last year in Molsheim. The Veyron is built to allow you the driver to just concentrate on driving at ludicrous speed without the need to be puckering the leather on the driver's seat. To concentrate on the road ahead and not worry that at any moment you maybe facing the wrong way at 200 plus. Remember this thing hits 300kph in about half the time it takes an enzo, zonda, SLR etc. Shit happens very quickly with this sort of acceleration, ask anyone who rides a superbike. A mate who owns a Maca F1 also has driven the Veyron and he has owned most supercars that you can think of and even he was blown completely away buy the Veyron's charachter, charm and ability.
If I had a big win on the lottery I'd buy two, one for me, one for the missus and I would not worry that she'd go out and kill herself in it because she wouldn't. The only down side to ownership apart from running costs as far as I see is the potential depreciation and that is unknown. In two years time it could either be worth double what you paid or you could have bought a Carrera GT with the money you lost.
p.s. The brakes. They are unbelievable, 250mph to standstill in 400 metres, 3g, but it is a heavy car and on a trackday using all of the cars performance and braking ability it will kill the brakes after a number of laps. It was never designed to be a race car and it does not try and pretend to be. It was designed to be the Ultimate GT and that it has achieved beyond any doubt.

Given the oppertunity to own or drive one, it would be to do one thing only...

Driving down an Autobahn with Heather Locklear (As you do) at 200mph, check your Bugatti watch and notice you may be a bit late for dinner, so floor the throttle and accelerate hard enough to squish Heather against the seat still. Perfect.

Watching the Autocar video where Chris Harris goes flat-out on the Autobahn, it sounds incredible - more like a 747 at takeoff than any other car I can think of. Perhaps not musical like an Enzo, but it's a sound which suggests immense power to me. It's quite amazing that the Veyron generates from 8 (reliable) litres almost as much power as an early 27-litre Rolls-Royce Merlin aero engine. (Momentary diversion, but I find the fact they were eventually getting towards 100 bhp/litre at 3000rpm pretty impressive too!)

I *really* hope I get to see and hear one some day!

Have you heard there's a superior Bug on the way, with way more power and stripped out interior. I suspect that will rewrite the laws of physics for those remaining doubters.

What for, it's never going to be light enough to race?

Oooh.. a side by side drag race would be interesting between an F1 car and a Veryon. The F1 car would win, but it would be interesting to see exactly what was between them.

In my mind, the Veryon has been built in the same vein as the macca F1. A sort of "If you could build a car, and money was no option, what would you build", and that, to me is what they did. It takes the pinnacle so much further. Imagine having a Veryon, AND a Macca f1 in your garage! Truly 2 of THE most awe inspiring pieces of engineering.

The only reason i like this car is because i saw one drive, or should i say 'reverbarate' past me the other day. It was only then by actually feeling the beast in motion a few metres away that it made an impact on me. I was walking to the depot on London road ( elephant and castle ) when i heard what can only be described as a diesel locomotive comming down the road. For some reason the noise together with the expectation of what should be on the road were mismatched; so i looked up and saw it.

Great article.

I find it very hard to take it seriously when someone claims that the F1 is much better (or whatever) if that person has driven neither car. Us mere mortals can only judge on style and reputation.

If you've driven both, then I feel you are qualified to comment beyond which car takes your fancy more....

Interesting article. So the Veyron is really fantastic, after all. The interior looks nice. Too bad they had to make it so ugly on the outside. I remember seeing the Veyron at the Paris Salon d'Automobile. It must have been in 1999 or possibly 1998, because the Alfa 156 and Porsche Carrera GT were shown at the same time. As was the Koenigsegg, and the Pagani Zonda. The Veyron, the Koenigsegg and the Zonda were all within 30 metres or so of each other in the hall. The Koenigsegg impressed because it looked brutal, although the finish, at that time, was not very nice. Sort of kit car. The Veyron was sitting almost just across the isle. Black and blue, I believe. It looked totally unimposing. And the front looked like the designer had been influenced by a VW Bug's front. Even the door handles looked like VW. Then I saw the Zonda. The fit and finish, and general impression - it just was in another world, a totally different class. Automobile jewlery.

Great article. I am seriously thinking of taking the plunge and going for a Veyron next year , God willing. But i seem to have this feeling that this car was created as the ULTIMATE 911 turbo?! before , i get slandered , look at the basics of the car: Small , compact , ok wide! , 4WD , not 2 but 4 turbo's , all weather supercar ,German , refined and smooth , etc. Do you think that, by removing the cachet of the Veyron , that an absurdly powerfull 997TT , say at 650bhp , would'nt offer at least 90% of what the Veyron is capable of? Maybe one would , reply that it's that elusive, exclusive 10% that makes the Veyon what it is and so out of reach , or imcomparable to others? what are your thoughts ? Sal..
This 10% is precisely why I would want to have one - even if you only keep it a year or so. It is always the people/experiences/things that provide 110% that make them so much more special and worth meeting/trying/owning. If you are a car nut and can afford it, why settle for second best?
