Do any of the Diablo owners know whether removal of the rear wing would have a material impact on top speed of the car (I'm assuming the downforce must be causing drag), and whether the handling is materially impacted?

For Brunters on the 12th I'm considering going from this:-

to this:-

...it looks a fairly easy job to get if off.... the hack-saw should go through the plastic quite easily.

I recall overhearing one of the guys at a VW meet last year saying that he did it frequently, but can't remember who it was.

Tony - do it!

As with it's illustrious predecessor, I'm firmly in the 'sans wing' fraternity.

The purist lines are usually the choicest, IMHO.

I seem to recall contemporary analyses of the Countach pretty much debunking the effectiveness of 'that' renegade from a Roswell project - but whether those of Diabolic incarnation actually pin things down any more, Gawd knows.

So take the sucker off and crack 190, maybe 200..? I'll be waiting with a celebratory bottle of something from the subterranean cellar of connoiseur Thomas.

Don't worry about the lift at all Tony; it is an airfield after all. Take it off, crack 200mph but remember there's a corner to get around at the end that demand some grip from the rear....

Sorry, nothing constructive to say really have I? If only I had the chance to experiment with Diablo wings.

Hey Jezza I hope you are joining us for the day, defending TVR's honour in the traditional valliant manner. Bloody eck, if you don't turn up I'm in danger of being the only sensible chap there.

I'll be there, but only helping Gruppenfuhrer Greg with the marshalling. I fancy coming along in the Porker estate this time; maybe a couple of Boxter-eating runs at the end of the day (four-up, naturally)?

I've seen Diablo's without wings so unless they have something else to stop them doing an impression of a 747 there shouldn't be a problem. Oh look there's one now

If it can be taken off and be able to be put back on then do it.

Just popped over from the Noble forum - also going on the 12th and will be trying winged and wingless.

Noble have been doing some testing apparently, and to quote them 'it makes a difference above 85', but in what way? If the difference is that it goes faster, then I'm all for it. However I'm not sure that's what they meant

Anyone here in F/M/L tried winged and wingless on the same car and could tell the difference?

Would the wing allow you to carry more spead through the bend at the start and thus give you a higher spead at the end.

Tony,
Had you been having an after work drink?
I thought the wing was added for "cosmetic" effect and adds very little downforce but probably some drag. As total drag (D) = the co-efficient of drag (Cd)x half Rho (air density) x V squared (velocity) x S (frontal surface) you will do better by putting some Escort wheels on the back and fitting a parachute to stop before the bend (or just spin the speed off in your usual way )
If you really want to know how fast it will go why not let me drive it before you have cooked the brakes next time

Tony - yes the drag will limit max speed, but a positive effect is that it will add stability. Some super-slippery cars can be unstable at high speed, and although a 'cosmetic' wing may not actually give you any down force it may help you keep it in a straight line at big speeds, especially if there is a cross wind.

In your dreams, Mr Copp.
You may share development and Big Reds my friend, but I'll let Emma enjoy pissing all over you. Beaten by a girlie? There's an automotive gauntlet throw if ever i heard one!

But I've heard the screams, giggles and expletives when riding shotgun in a certain Cerbera, so she doesn't scare me.

Being slightly serious for a minute, anyone got any tips for these high speed runs?

Normally for a track day you get all concerned with tyre pressures etc and I assume this will be similar, but there must be a few other things to check when you're planning to run up to 170mph+....

Any tips for a newbie?

And yes to stay slightly on topice, take the wing off it looks better Tony No idea about the aerodynamics though....

Its very close on paper, my sty dwelling friend:

Poxster Labrador Carrier
260bhp 315bhp
228lbs.ft 302lbs.ft
186bhp/tonne 197bhp/tonne
5.7 (0-60) 4.8 (0-60)
164mph max 164mph max

Emma will have trouble fitting four in though.

Nothing specific Rich, just the normal checks:
- tyre pressures and most importantly condition.
- engine fluid levels.
- BRAKES; condition of pad, disks and fluid
- make sure nothing loose externally (travelling at high speed will detach anything not nailed down as the Porker crew discovered ).
