Has anyone got some knowledge or experience with something like the Ford EDIS (Electronic Distributor less Ignition System) for a Rover V8? Does a similar product exist for the RV8?

The idea is to use a 4.6 Serpentine engine with carburettor in a Dax Rush. I don’t like the Efi set up in the Rush since the bonnet has to be cut at various places.

I am not sure if an older stile timing cover could be used on a gems type block anyway.
Furthermore, I would assume an electronic ignition unit with CPU could be adjusted and set-up better than a mechanical advance of the distributor.

I personally dont understand why they cut the bonnet anyway. From what ive seen, it only pokes out a little bit.
I cant find it right now, but theres an article about reducing the height by machining a bit of the manifold and machinng a bit of the trumpet base and then i think shortening the trumpets and then machining the plenumn cover down.
The arcticle was related to getting it into an MGB. I'll keep searching.

You may also want to consider megasquirt-n-edis which drives a ford edis-8 coil pack.

The front timing covers are interchangable, i think you need to swap the sump to.

The front covers are not interchangeable on a Rover V8 as the pre serp oil pump is driven by the distributor and the later serpentine pump is direct off the crank. You can change the cranks over but the later type is definately a better set up.

Are you sure they aren't interchangeable? V8 Developments offered me a kit to convert from pre-serpentine to intermediate, and it didn't involve a crank change.

Looks interesting. Thanks for the link. However, I already have performer manifold and a Weber 500 with the round cut-out in the bonnet. So I would have to get the complete Efi and a new bonnet.

The older style timing cover could most probably be made to fit. A pre Serpentine camshaft will give the oil pump drive gear. The 4.6 Serpentine crank is likely to be longer due to the oil pump drive but this could easily be altered.
But I agree with you, this would be a step back.
Hence the question for an independent ignition system, which can utilize the Serpentine ignition timing wheel.

i'm sure mark adams would be able to recommend something. I've seen Rv8 running on a coilpack, but assume this is with full 3rd party engine management... which in your case would be overkill

i know the Omex m100 system does this for 4 cylinder engines(my mates runs one on a toyota lump), dunno whether its possible but might be able to run 2 of these? with different timing offsets.. omex's 8 cylinder product is for dizzy's unfortunately

you could run the ford edis system by using MegaSquirtnEDIS, but just use the spark side of it rather than the fuel side. Its easy enough to do, just need to find an 8 cylinder edis system. There are loads of them in the states.
