Gearbox problem Vauxhall Astra

Wouldn't the supplying Dealer bear some responsibility within six months? It's not an old banger, at this age and mileage.

That's what I was hoping for but they are not being that helpful as I didn't take out their overpriced extra warranty. They are pretty convinced though that this a manufacturing issue and to keep at Vauxhall , not sure if they're just passing the buck though ? Tim
I recently experienced similar with Renault on a car that was just outside (and i mean weeks) it's manufacturers warranty.
Diff bearings in manual gearbox failed, so the car sounded like a bag of spanners in a cement mixer.
I tried Renault UK, but there wasn't much they could offer. Basically, they would need to see the car and remove the gearbox for inspection.
IF they concluded that it failed due to a manufacturing error, then they would potentially offer to contribute towards the costs. As they pointed out, at main dealer prices and even if they offered say 50%, I'd still be looking at a bill of a few grand.
On the other hand, if they decided it failed due to normal wear and tear, i would have to fork out the entire repair cost. Even if i told them not to bother and collected it in piece, the bill would still be north of a grand.
Their suggestion was to take it to a specialist and have it rebuilt, which TBH was probably the only viable / cost effective option.
The specialist i took the car to however, rather than take on the job, instead pointed out which local car supermarkets didn't drive their PX's!

Their warranty would only add to your rights. Of course they want you to go to Vauxhall, they're worried that you'll ask them to fix it.This would be my first port of call, not Vauxhall,

They were my first port of call at first they weren't interested because I didn't have extended warranty , I called them back, asked for a manager and he also said it wasn't up to them and to pursue things with Vauxhall , I will be returning to them though if I get nowhere with Vauxhall This would be my first port of call, not Vauxhall,

Where did you buy the car from? Is it just under or over 6 months since you bought it? It may be worth pursuing the dealer who sold you the car under Sale of Goods Act if it is less than 6 months as the onus is on them to prove that the car wasn't faulty when they sold it to you. A mention of a report to trading standards may make things happen quicker.
Where are you in Cheshire? It may be worth speaking to AS Autocare in Liverpool, they are an independent Vauxhall specialist who will be able to offer you some proper advice and are a reputable garage.

Thanks for the info though I will get their number and give them a call
Sounds like a similar problem a friend of mine had a few years ago with his Vectra, it was diagnosed as being caused by the cooling system. He had also bought it from an independent a few months prior. After months of wrangling with Vauxhall they eventually agreed to cover 50% of the repair costs which was in the region of £7k

The relevant time-scale would be from when you bought the car, to when you first had the fault and notified the garage that you bought it from. Thanks for the info though I will get their number and give them a call

I bet that pissed a few off on here. Vauxhall being st and all that.
Great result.
They are normally. If you're a gearbox fixer as your earlier post suggests then you won't need me to tell you about the chocolate M32 gearbox and the endless problems it suffers from poor quality components. You try getting Vx to admit there's anything wrong with it and as for getting them to fund the repairs well good luck with that one.Great result.
