Advice please MGA gear box

What is the correct way of assembling the gear lever? There's a split brass bush which fits into the selector ,the ball on the end of the g/lever locates into this.Ive tried putting the bush into the selector and also putting the bush onto the lever,problem when the gear lever is bolted down all goes solid I get the impression the housing needs to be shimmed,however there's no mention of this in the MGA workshop manual To add to the mix the remote has been cut off and the lever housing welded back on giving the appearance more like the MGB box.This is a Grantura part restored car I Bought but the modification appears to be long standing so I guess It worked at one stage Thanks for any advice
