I have just replaced the engine in the TR7 and i thought I'd labeled everything up to ensure and easy re-connection transition.

I was wrong

I have wired up the starter motor incorrectly resulting in a no start situation

The solenoid has two posts - one with a strap to the starter and another one which takes the battery + lead. There are another 2 large wires which I have also attached to this post

Then there are 2 other small wires - one which screws to the top of the solenoid and one which is a spade connection to the bottom of the solenoid

Any ideas what I have done wrong?

I've checked the starter motor previously and it worked fine...

From what you've said, my guess is that the solenoid battery +ve post takes the main high current power straight from the battery and is also used to distribute power to the rest of the vehicle via those other two wires. You might find they go to the alternator and fuse/relay box. The strap connects the battery +ve to starter +ve when the solenoid operates. The starter will probably br grounded via the engine. Is the engine ground strap fitted?

The other two connections to the solenoid operate the solenoid. Typically one would come from the cranking output of the ignition switch, and the other would go to ground. There may be an immobiliser somewhere in that circuit.

I'd verify the following to trace the problem:

12v between solenoid +ve post and battery -ve
12v between ignition switch and battery -ve
12v between cranking terminal on the ignition switch and battery -ve when switch is in the cranking position
12v across solenoid coil circuit when switch is in the cranking position
Solenoid operates when 12v is applied across it
12v between starter motor +ve and battery -ve when the solenoid operates

Thanks Fella

I'll get the Voltmeter on it tomorrow
