Hi all,

Just purchased a 2008 Grand Vitara Diesel. Engine is a 1.9 lump from Renault I believe. Currently on 80k.

Issue that I am having is an intermittent white smoke cloud from the exhaust. It seems to be when it slightly warmer (not a cold start issue), but can go away 10 minutes later for no reason.

Owner failed to notify me of an engine replacement (not under warranty) so I'm going to see where I stand on that front and whether I can send the car back (private sale and all that).

Anyway, I'd like to get it sorted so any help would be amazing.

Regards,
Andy

The Renault 1.9 DCi was infamous for turbo failures. Does the smoke have a blue tint and smell 'oily'? Doe the engine use oil?

White "smoke" from a diesel is normally either unburnt diesel or steam.

Typical causes are as above turbo failure, over-fuelling, bad timing, or as the alternative above steam could be cylinder head/gasket failure.

Having said that all of the above would have the added symptoms of poor running/loss of power/over-heating, none of which you mention.

Unfortunately as the OP never got back to us we have no idea what was his problem, but as above it is either steam or unburnt diesel, diesel smells of, er....diesel, steam doesn't. You could always have a closer look yourself as you can see it better than us.
