So, just bought a 2006 mondeo tdci as a second car cheap run around. 132k full year mot for 600 notes.
When misses was following me home she said it was smoking a lot on acceleration, grey smoke.instantly went back to seller, was told a) He had put a little red diesel in it and b) They all do that sir(which I now think has a grain of truth.)
Put a bottle of eg244 in the fuel plus a tankful of quality diesel, cleaned egr valve(not too bad) and MAF sensor, things have improved significantly, although only time it smokes now is if you go into 3rd a fraction early and it's under load, especially up a hill.
If you accelerate fully in 1st,2nd it isn't as bad? Mot guy said emissions were spot on, anything else I can try? It's just a bit embarrassing and I'm always looking in rear view mirror for my next gassing victim! ;-)
It doesn't smoke at cold start or any other time/gear really. Thanks.

Have you had a close look at the dpf (assuming it has one) to see if some ingrate has removed the innards & welded it back up?

No dpf, s on mk3, s so I've heard. Mk4, s on I think. Cars not showing any fault lights or codes. Starts first time, idles completely steady and no misses on acceleration.

They all do it. You will find if you hold a steady throttle, say on a motorway run, when you finally come off and accelerate there is a nice cloud behind you! Mine only does it once then clears and it's fine.

Might be worth putting a new EGR on as even if they are clean, they do stick a bit after a while.
