Hi all, i've recently bought an 07 C4 Hatchback 1.6Hdi. There were no issues for a couple of weeks while the temperature was around 10deg C but now it's between 0 and 5 degrees i have experienced difficulties starting the car.

I have replaced the battery incase but the issue still persits. When the engine turns over it'll run but then cut out a few seconds after starting. After this it will turn over but not start. However if the car has been running that day or it is generally warmer then there are no problems. Once the car is up to temp there are also no idling, running issues etc.

I initially thought glow plugs but browsing various forums it seems these are only required below 0 degrees. Other things i have seen on forums is the cam position sensor or EGR valve, but these only be a problem when cold starting?

Thanks in advance for any help

Test the glow plugs. If all four are shot those engines are a mare to start. If the egr is sticking it can cause starting issues. You won't know til you scan it to see if their is any faults stored and read some data

The engine won't turn over at all? That'll be nothing to do with glow plugs, EGRs etc.

Is it clicking when you turn the ignition. If so your starter motor is goosed. It's down the back of the engine. Sometimes a few taps of a hammer will bring it to life. You may need a long bar to reach it. Have you tried getting a mate to push start it with you. Sit in with the ignition on, put it into second gear get your mate to push the car to a running speed then let your foot off the clutch quickly

You’ll need to re boot the Bsi if you’ve changed the battery , Does eco mode come up on the dash when you start it ?
It won’t crank if it doesn’t like the batteries charge state .

Thanks for the replies - Apologies i made an error in my original post which i have now edited. After it cuts out on first start it will then turn over but not start. I have also been able to eventually get it started whilst jump starting could this be nackered glow plugs but the two batteries is enough to just get the plugs working to start (with a struggle) ?

If it’s on first start then have a careful check of all the plastic fuel lines for chafing as they can let fuel run back overnight and give these symptoms , a plug in should tell you which glow plugs are working
