Hi all,

I own a Seat ibiza sport black, 2010. So i've had the car for a while and noticed that the fuel is very poor. Whenever i find the average MPG, it is always around 15.2 to 15.7, yet when driving it shows the other MPG setting around 40 ish. when the tank is half full it only shows as having around 80 to 85 as the range, and £10 will only give me around 30 miles if that. I have replaced the fuel filter and yet the problem still occurs, i have got the fuel injectors inspected and there was no problems with that, any help will be appreciated!

Have you calculated your MPG properly or are you relying on the onboard computer? Show your working?
A Seat Ibiza 1.4 should not be able to do so few miles on a gallon without other symptoms.
What kind of journeys are you doing?
If it is using that much fuel you're going to have to fix it fast before you kill your Cat.

I have relied on the on board computer for this, and have been travelling doing general journeys, college, work etc. the thing i do not get is that when i put £10 of fuel in, the range will only increase by around 30 - 35 miles, but after around 10 miles the fuel light will come on. Before i bought the car, it failed a MOT test on hydrocarbon emissions, im guessing this is linked with the cat? should i get the cat checked out, everything else seems fine (fuel injector/fuel filter)

In future you should fill up your fuel tank each time and reset the trip computer, then you can see how many miles you're getting to a tank and how much fuel you have to put in to brim it again, really easy to do the sums that way. As you know, keeping an eye on fuel economy is a good way to spot problems.
It wouldn't pass an MOT burning that much fuel. If there are no other symptoms it's likely to be a sensor problem. Lambda perhaps, or coolant temperature?

P.s. No warning lights on the dash? For proper diagnosis you're probably going to have to get it plugged in and have the codes read.

There is clearly a problem. How does the car run? Any performance issues? Any evidence of fuel leaks?

As above, fill the car up measure the use between fill ups

The car runs smooth, performance seems fine, for a 1.4 at least anyways. There are leaks from behind the vehicle, this is only when the car is started, once its running, there are not any noticeable leaks, had it confirmed by a garage that there wasn't any leaks, but when the car is started there is a leak. I simply thought that it would perhaps be because of the weather or something.

Thanks, i normally reset it when filling up, however i usually fill up in increments and hardly with a full tank. I haven't noticed any other symptoms as of yet except for a slight smell of gas shortly after the car has started. There hasn't been any engine lights on as of yet, i will get it plugged in and see whats wrong ASAP!, thanks a lot. Would you suggest that if i used them 'petrol fuel cleaners' that it could fix it?

Nah. To be honest the fuel consumption is so bad that I've shortcutted a load of possibilities, including Student driver (teenager?) probably driving like a loon. It just shouldn't be able to burn that much. It's way past magic potions.

Yeah, in the late teens which is why the fuel costs are so forever hurting me. The thing is, i'm on a blackbox so i have been driving normally, going in high gears when i can to keep the revs low, trying to be as economical as i can but it still persists

You're talking watery stuff from the exhaust right? Not petrol from under the car?

yeah i think that it has to be water, there wasn't any colour to it, and the texture felt like water.

IIRC VAG 1.4 of the 00s used to have very fragile temp sensors, the ECU output used to fail making the car think it was -50 or something so it would pour in fuel like there was no tomorrow.

Worth changing that, thnk they are only 30 quid or so

thanks ill have that looked at too, the temperature on the on board computer seems to be normal however, guessing the temp sensor isn't directly collerated to it?

Hi Did you get the problem sorted and if so what was the problem , I’ve got a seat Ibiza 2010 1.4 which is having similar problems with fuel
