Yes, I know! smile Not really engine or drivetrain and maybe understandably there's no forum for Hyundai. But my much liked daily driver, a 2008 i-10, showed a constant "EPS" light on start up today (Electric Power Steering) and the steering was no longer assisted. All has been perfect up to the time I parked it last night.

Shutting down and restarting made no difference so the next step will have to be a dealer with Hyundai diagnostic equipment. Unfortunately I can't do that for more than 2 weeks now due to working away commitments so in the meantime just wondered on the off-chance anyone knew whether this was a known/common issue. Obviously a fuse would be a great result. An ECU less wonderful but better than the entire column mounted unit that I believe can be £1,000+

Any known history would be much appreciated.

In the absence of any further information why not just check the fuse & all electrical connectors anyway?

Doesn't need a dealer does it?
Any decent diagnostic kit can pull the fault codes.
Have a good check of all fuses, then have a look at the wiring to the Eps, see if anything is rubbing/chaffing.
Ten year old car, so no warranty concerns, if it turns out you do need an Eps unit then get a used one. You cant spend £1k+ on such an old car surely?

Yes, I intend to do just that when I return to the UK. I discovered that it was u/s a few hours before leaving home for a fortnight on work so didn't have any time to do much more than post on PH to see whether there was a "known" issue to look for first.

Thanks for posting. thumbup

Thanks for suggestions. I'll check the fuses as soon as I can after getting back to the UK. If I find one blown that would be a result as that could indicate something has chafed through. I suppose it could also indicate that the ECU has gone and taken the fuse with it.

I wont rule anything out but I'm not very hopeful of the rubbing/chafing possibility. Thre was no history, no intermittent problem, no warning of anything between shutting it down in the evening and starting the next morning. Although I suppose if something shorts (and takes a fuse with it) there's no real reason why there should necessarily be any intermittant issues warning of this beforehand as the insulation gets very thin.

No, usually I can't spend £1k+ on what will soon be a ten year old car. BUT I bought it for my wife after her cherished 4WS Prelude was written off by a skip lorry. It's the much rarer "Style" varient which means fully opening electric glass sunroof, heated seats, aloys etc and especially the with the ESR it fufilled all her fairly modest needs. Sadly she became ill a year or so later, and passed away 16 months ago. For reasons that perhaps go beyond the fact that I often use this very practical car myself for local and central London journeys in preference to the Merc E350 4-matic estate or the Chimaera 450 in the garage, on this one occasion £1k+ may be a pure indulgence on sentimental grounds on top of any practical ones.
