A proper scan of data may reveal something even though no EML.

Pressing the throttle should make no difference at all to starting.
The filling with fuel may be a red herring...but maybe open up or drain ( replace ) the fuel filter and have a look.

I had a C class with that engine a few years back and it started doing that. Would turn over happily but not actually start. Turned out to be an immobiliser glitch, caused, from memory, by a dodgy key. Mine wasn’t keyless though; the key slotted into the dashboard. A bit of a long shot, but could you try with the spare key and see if you still have the issue?

Depends how much fuel is recirculated during normal use and how much it would take to replenish the already full filter etc.

So driving quiet a few miles would be very possible. And if it smells of petrol....petrol and diesel do not smell alike.

As said, get the filter out and drain it and see what's up there.

If there is evidence of the station screwing up and having wrong fuel in the tanks/pumps, local media would be best way to get word out, or social media. As there is no doubt there will be others.

It is very rare it does happen, but it does happen.

And is the receipt definitely for the pump she filled from, as it could also be possible it's a receipt for same amount, but perhaps wrong pump.

You will need to have the fuel properly tested.

Opinion of smell will not be enough, and if there are genuinely no other complainants it would seem unlikely somehow only a single car managed to get the wrong fuel from a pump.

I would be very surprised if diesel contaminated by petrol was hard to start but ran perfectly fine afterwards. The one thing petrol does well is ignite. The problem ought to be knocking from pre-ignition, not refusing to ignite at all. Correlation does not equal causation. An unrelated fault may be manifesting and you just happened to fill up with fuel immediately before it started. I bet you've never sniffed the fuel tank before and don't really know if it smells differently now to how it ever did. As for anyone not believing two lawyers I tend to find them about as unreliable as anyone you ever meet. They lie for a living after all. Hardly surprising that spills over into private life. The only ones who lie even more than the lawyers IME is the police. They testylie their arses off.

I'd be checking its previous fill/top up, which is possibly the next likely candidate.

Check the local FB pages for reports of similar, will soon become obvious & known to the local garages etc.

Go and fill a jerry can from the same pump now & check for a whiff.

I'd say the sooner the better - it needs to be before the next resupply, and we have no way of knowing when the filling station will be / was resupplied.

Thanks for the closure update.

I think they’d get away with most of the cases, you have to be clued up to stick it to them.

wonder if they paid up for any others?

Social media etc is the way to find out....and assist others who've had the same misfortune.
