I had uniroyals on the front car which are down to the marks anyway. Car went in for a drop link few days ago then I noticed this tyre on front left. Got loads of tread but chunk out of it.

Yes, no way that would pass an MOT.

Well that’s the thing drop link was being replaced for MOT. Retested and passed with this tyre on.

Can’t be as deep as it looks then, I’m amazed that passed an MOT, or the tester had been out on the lash the night before hehe

No cords showing ? In which case it’s the rim protector, run it a bit longer

Can’t see from that camera angle - judging by the state of the wheel, I am not surprised.

Saab 9-3 2003+?

Just a guess from the wheels. If so, they can be a bit fussy with tyre balancing and that will now be a touch out. You may get a wobble at a certain speed. I had that on some Nexens and it went away when they were replaced.

As for the condition of the tyre, I would replace it and the one on the other side so they match unless they are 6mm+ left. I never mess with tyres having had a blow out at 90mph years ago.

The responsible answer is that yes, I would replace it.

Would I really, though? I’m not so sure. For me it would depend largely on what I use the car for. Pottering about at normal speeds, it will “probably” be fine for the remainder of its service life. But tearing down a runway at 140 knots for three hours at a time...probably not a gamble I’d be comfortable making.

That's a big chunk. I have stuck down sidewall rips in the past but nothing as big as that. I would change it.

For those saying yes they would 100% replace, can I ask why? And also what first hand experience they have of sidewall nicks in tyres they’ve had on their own cars?

You said you'd leave it so what's your expertise to say that?

It’s a 9-3 2003 yes.

It has good tread on it just this chunk out of it.

I thought something was wrong car was pulling ever so slightly left. Didn’t check it until I got home and seen this tyre on.
I do need to replace the other side soon anyway. I was hoping to wait until next pay check.

As I said, I had a blow out once at 90mph. From the way it split along the sidewall while having 5mm or so of tread my mechanic suggested that there was a split, bulge or chunk missing.

Separately, I have seen a bulge on the sidewall of my wife's car grow in front of my eyes from damage that looked not dissimilar to this at first.

I am pretty laid back about most things car related but never with tyres or brakes. Usually there are other cars about so I'd rather not hit them just because I chose to scrimp on tyres or brakes.

The sidewall is compromised. How much thickness is remaining? One good impact from a pothole or whatever could be the final straw.

I have found tyresonthedrive to be pretty reasonable of late for those size tyres. (I have the same wheels). I went for some Falken and they seem to suit it well.

i cant believe someone is asking such a question.

obviously you MUST replace this tyre.....this is dangerous.....guess what happens if your tyre bursts and your are involved in an accident where OTHERS are harmed...i dont care abo9ut you...but i dont want to be THE other.

the MOT tester´s licence should get withdrawn!!!
