There is simply no facepalm big enough to come even close to covering that one.

Because you seem to be ignoring every single piece of sensible advice that has been given.

You say you didnt see the temperature gauge until after you lifted the bonnet when the engine was already stopped so the oil light would be on.
Thats the only bit of good news, if its a 2.4diesel in a Chrysler then I assume its a VM engine and they were crap from the start. They were an engine originally designed for marine use and didnt take well to being modified for road use. If its been overheated to that extent the heads will be warped, the top of the liners will be burnt and probably the pistons picked up on the liners. The parts alone will be more than the vehicle is worth.

I can't undo the sump plug so I can drain the oil and see if I can spot any metal bits, and there is also no improvement when I turn the engine, which leads me to believe one or more piston rings are broke.
I think this car has decided it no longer wants to live.

Big Bertha will make its last journey to the scrap yard in the sky some time before its next MOT due date.

Big Bertha will be sadly missed.

There will be metallic elements in the oil take it from me!

As said, sadly the options here are:
-back street garage engine swap
-sell it spares or repair on ebay, buyer collects
-weight it in for scrap metal
