VW GOLF MK 6

Things I have noticed recently:
Intermittent juddering when idle (e.g. at lights)
Intermittent 'smell' (I thought exhaust)
Slight oil leak on drive (not often)
Slight crunch (clutch pedal) when changing gear

What just happened:
Stopped at lights and took the car out of gear, handbrake on.
Went to move off, handbrake up, clutch pedal went down with a sudden bang, gears wouldn't engage, car immobile.

Do clutches usually fail like this? Did the clutch cable snap? Is the gear box knackered too?

What is your best guess as to what actually happened wise people?
Please explain to someone who has no idea!

Thank you!

Anything that can fail can fail suddenly.

Having said that it sounds more like a failure of the clutch slave cylinder.

Check the level of fluid in the (probably combined) clutch/brake fluid reservoir and for a bigger "oil leak" which you mention, as they are likely connected.
