Predictably enough, considering my situation but :

Can anyone recommend a good book on building / rebuilding Ford X flow engines for performance use ?

And, even better, show me where to get one / have one they'd like to sell 2nd hand ?

Have got the book building and tuning X flow engines and it's crap.You're best bet is to speak to someone who builds X flow engines.Speak to Vegantune and ask for Steve Parkers phone number.He has built a number of hot X flow engines and used to have an apprentice called Roger king.He resides near Stanstead.Think the hotest he built was 208bhp flywheel figure.

I think I've got a book somewhere (probably in the loft)which will start you off. I'll have a look in the next couple of days, and if I find it let you know.

Back in 1988 I had a MK1 XR2 and I had the lump out and did bits and bods too it. I bored the engine to 1700 (+90thou) and used a Burton P1 fast road/rally cam. I also had a stage 3 head on the car which was gas flowed. The block is totally different to the x-flow from Escorts etc but the heads are the same. I lightened and balanaced the Flywheel and crank and flowed the head myself.

Some tips. The stage 3 head is has the same size valves 43/39 (inlet/outlet) as I reall as a standard XR2 MK1 but the head is not gasflowed, get a stage 4 and the exhaust valves are larger. However the valve clearance on the top of the head is minimal. Make sure you have the double springs to stop valve bounce if you are revving over 7000.

Also if you can get hold of the old 1300cc pistons then they have a higher compression ratio about 12 or 13:1, I had 10.5:1 with standard 1600cc pistons but + 90thou. Oh and a PECO exhaust. I changed this to a JANSPEED after a while

I didn’t use DCO’s but standard MK2 carb.

My power was 110 at the wheels which is about 140 at the flywheel. With 1300cc pistons or the old power max 1680cc you would get around +10-15bph and with DCO’s you would get +25 – 35bph depending if you use 40’s 45’s or the monster 48’s. you have to install oil cooler here though. with a different cam you might get 180bph. I recall and ad for the PINTO 2000cc engine with higher compression pistons and a hot cam giving out 210bph, but we are talking 14 years ago now!

I had a 0-60 of 6.7 seconds as my set up which was fast for a car 14 years ago!!! With 110 bph at the wheels.

All in all a blast when I was 18…
