I guess you can't cos I haven't seen it ,metioned anywhere but wtf does anyone knwo if you can increase the bore or stroke of the 1.8l Rover k series engine or is it at the limit? A little extra torque is always nice!

I don't actually know, but I don't think so. All K Series (1.4-1.8) use the same basic block/head I believe (with the exception of vhpd/vcc stuff) and 1.8 is the limit.

The K-Series was never even designed to go to 1.8 litres and doing so required some imaginative thinking by Rover engineers with 'damp liners' so fairly safe to assume that's as big as it'll go.

Besides which, the gains from a slight overbore would be negligible.
power =PxLxAxN (plan)

p=bmep(average pressure pushing on piston)
l=length of stroke(how far that pressure will push mr piston)
a=area of bore(area of piston that pressure works on)
n=number of "putts" engine makes in one minute.Represents how fast engine is going and number of cyls.
n=number of cyls x rpm/2 (for a 4 stroke)

The single most effective change you can make with the above is "p", higher bmep better torque output.

I saw an exhibitor at this year's Autosport show at the NEC who showed a 2.0 litre K series. Even had a word with him to make sure he hadn't made a mistake.

I think that would be about the absolute maximum limit for this 1.4 engine.

Anyway, this is of no help to you as I can't remember the exhibitor involved...

The 2-litre version, which we are currently referring to as the ‘K2000’, will give performance that has so far been unavailable from what is an extremely light and compact powerplant, so we are hopeful that it will generate substantial interest from existing ‘K’ series users”, said John Judd."

Hopefully it will be avaiable as an upgrade sometime, maybe a block swap?

Can they offset the bores from the cetre line of the block to gain more space between them?


Effectively creating a 2 or 3 degree V4 inside a single block. I'm sure some of the big bore/short stroke Mini Cooper 'S's (ie 1071cc) pulled off a trick like that. Revved to +10k too, must have sounded awesome at the time.
