Does anybody have any info on previous attempts to use water as a fuel in motor vehicles? I have been reliably informed that such technology has existed for at least 20 years, but that oil companies have bought the patents. I'm particularly interested in the technique used to convert a standard internal combustion petrol engine to run on water using an electrolyser.

Any help appreciated as this is for my final year university project and the lecturers are trying to get me to change the subject, they say its too political for a science degree. The fact that the entire department is financially assisted by a large oil company has nothing to do with the lecturer's opinions of course . . . .
