Hi guys and galls,
I'm putting a 3.5 rv8 into my mgb, got most of the wiring done but have come a little unstuck on the wiring for the coil, and distributer etc...
By the way its a 3.5 sd1 engine runnng carbs (not efi)
So if anyone can advise me on how the wiring should go any help would be much appresiated, thanks

What type of dizzy is it?
What voltage coil?

If it's points then it is probably no different to your old B wiring.
If the dizzy is electronic then does it have the ignition amp on the side of the dizzy or under the coil. If on side of dizzy then how many pins 2 or 3.

hi there, the coil is a range rover v8 12v type. I dont think the dizzy is electronic as cant see an ignition amp anywhere, but as you can tell wiring isnt my strong point. Here is a pic of the dizzy, as you can see theres red, black and blue, so i guess pos, neg, but not sure what blue is.
The wiring on the b has 2 wires going to the coil and 1 earth from it but cant remember where they go as took the old engine out so long ago, so like I said any help much appreciated.

Thats an electronic dizzy with the plug missing scratchchin should have a short bit of loom that goes to the ignition module then the coil wiring comes from that.

Yep that's an electronic. If you take the cap off and remove the plastic cover inside (if it still has one) you will find no points and a 8 pointed star passing a plastic lump which is the sensor.

What you now need is the ignition amplifier which in your case will be quite large and will have the coil mounted on top of it. I hope you picked this up from the donor.

hmmm. dont think i have it! frown .
Oddly i thought when i took the top off earlier I saw a set of points in there, but I'd have to check, is it possible someone could have modified it to put points in???
Annoyingly I saw the engine running in an old series landy afew months ago, but the bloke took it out for me and told me all the bits were there. I didn't double check, as was more concerned with the rest of the car at the time, oops.
I will double check tomorrow and report back with my findings, thanks

I thought it was a points based one - due the the little knob on the side which adjusts the points gap iirc.
Pull the cap of to check, maybe its been converted?

If it were points I would be looking for just one wire for its connection (probably Black).

drum roll please............... the verdict is..... its elctronic ! with the 8 sided star thingy inside.
So the million dollar question is how do i wire it up ? and if i'm using a standard range rover v8 12v coil will this be compatable?
thanks in advance

be this the beastie I need??? and I assume (stupidly I expect) that the 3 wires I have should have a plug that clips in to the one under the coil?

Not sure that's the one you need, that may be for the Lucas Opus system(v early) scratchchin can anyone else confirm my thoughts on that one whistle the module generally fitted to these cars is about the size of an After Eight Mint(but thicker) hehe attached to a small metal plate that sits underneath the coil bracket fixing(cant use your points coil) smile

Better still go for this one on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rover-V8-Distributor_W0QQite...

It has the ignition amp on the side of the dizzy and we can soon tell you how to wire it.
Shame is I cut one of those up the other week.

ok good stuff, i better have a bid then.
I might have to ask you to do a little doodle to show me how to wire it in then. So what sort of coil do i need with this then?

Any standard 12V coil should do the job. There are no fancy resistors or resistant wires connected to the starter etc.

Hi Dirtyboy, Have a complete ignition set, off a 3.9L with hotwire injection, it is two wire from distributor, however it is all there! You are welcome to it if you collect it.

Have a question, which is on the same subject, the wiring diagram for the 14CUX shows a resistor between the negative coil and the ECU, is this necessary and if it is, what value would it be?
I am sure that one of you guys will know, so thanks in advance.

Yes you do need it as the low tension side of the coil can still produce some high voltage spikes which could blow up the ECU.
The resistor is part number RD953066 and is 6.8K Ohm.
