Can anyone PLEASE recomend a good garage in the Battle/Hastings area in East Sussex (actually anything up to 20 miles from Battle is ok, as long as the garage comes recomended)?

I've STILL got problems with my Golf, but have given up hope with my normal garage.

Had the car up on axle stands last night to try & finally trace the awful noise the car has been making for the last 2 weeks, and I've got it down to the gearbox/diff as making the noise (having previously though & been told it was a wheel bearing !). I want to take it to a completely fresh garage & get their oppinion. If it is shot, I'll source a 2nd hand replacement & get the new garage to swap them over for me....

Any names/numbers gratefully received

Olly, if it's a thrumming noise you hear at certain speeds and very noticeable when on a road surface with little noise and at low speed then a similar think happened on my '96 Mk3 GTI. I took it to the VW gods at Dubsport ( www.dubsport.com ) and they diagnosed it as a worn / knackered diff. If you can spare a trip to Wigan (just off J27 (I think)of the M6) then they are the boys without a doubt. I know it's not nearby but they know their stuff when it comes to dubs. Get a Blue Flame exhaust lobbed on while you're there too

Thanks for the replies guys - will certainly give Gerald Dale a try (althoguh, I took the car to one of the manay garages in Battle last (Senlac Garage) night & after 45 mins of poking & prodding we've traced the problem to a very tired front off-side wheel bearing, so car is booked in with them on Tuesday to have it replaced) (or should I say, we hope we have).

Noise did/does sound like it's coming from the diff, but only becase the noise from the bearing is travelling down the driveshaft (off-side is solid on a Mk1 golf, so noise travells better (it's hollow on the near-side)).

So, fingers crossed, we've finally got it sorted !

(BTW, Roop, are you the same Roop that used to live on the Cerbera Yahoo list ?)
