Only noticed this on Tuesday. My car is making a funny whining noise, that I could only compare to the noise a straight-cut gearbox makes. I've checked with the car in neutral with the clutch in and it still makes the noise, so I'm guessing it's in the engine somewhere. It's a 1.4 VAG (SEAT) Mpi with 31,000 miles on it. Oil level is fine, it's due a service and it's running perfectly. Any ideas what's making the noise?

Is the fuel filter scheduled for replacement or have you let the tank run low recently? I guess it might be possible for the pump to be struggling a bit if the filter's a bit clogged.

It increases with frequency as revs rise, and gets quieter. When the engine is above 4500 rpm (redline at 5500 ) I can't really hear it, because the frequency is so high. If it's the fuel pump I won't be too worried because it'll be serviced soon

Or maybe the alternator bearing. If the fuel pump is electric (which I guess it is) the sound it makes wouldn't change with engine revs I wouldn't have though (?)
