If the coil of a relay burns out then it just stops working.
...or if one of the hair-thin wires from the coil to the terminals breaks due to vibration, which is probably more common...

Can relays play up like that though, work 1 minute and not the next, i'd have thought that when they are ready to go then thats it, end of, never mind, problem solved.
Thanks again Stevie and Martin for your replies.
Not if the contacts are burning/arcing or any relay fly back circuit issues frown then a very intermittent fault arrives and usually temp related too rolleyes good you got it fixed wink

Broken solder joints inside fuel pump/EFI relays is a common problem, and give very intermittent operation.

Wos appened to people trying to fix car faults these days? OK I know they're all full of electrickery and black boxes and gubbins wot no one can understand but is it any more difficult now than 30 years ago to crank something over and see if A) you've got sparks and B) you've got fuel? At least it points yer in the right direction.

Replacing coil packs when the fault codes say injector problem leaves me somewhat speechless. OK so that's a good thing chimes in most of the audience, especially VetteG and his lad Mattius smile

Well everything i done was on the advice of a mechanic (over the phone).
I'll be honest with you, i'm really not the best with under the bonnet stuff, never really showed any interest as a boy and when i started driving it was a case of if it starts then fine, its only in the last couple of years that i'm starting to take an interest into the mechanical side of things, silly me really and as i said earlier, an expensive lesson learnt.
Thanks.

But it doesnt end there, took the car for a wash today then onto McDonalds, got back into the car and it wouldnt start, checked that the relays were in ok and it started but with the engine light on, gets home and let it idle for a bit and every so often the revs drop a little bit, plugged in my fault code checker and got the same codes as before, P0201 P0203 P0204 and P0202 in that order, back to the mechanic/auto elec again for further investigation, was running fine all week too, mmmmmm.

Hey I'm having a very similar problem with my astra saying 3 out of 4 injector circuit's high any idea how to test the wiring?!

I've tested the resistance of the injectors and they all seem fine and I doubt 3 injectors have failed all at once.

Also I know it was years ago but if the original poster reads this what was your resolution?

Cheers
