Hi Maserati forum.

Ok, so I'm just about to spend £55 to £60k on a DB9 Volante and my mate suggests I take a look at the Grancabrio. Well, now I have a dilemma, the V8 sound is truly fantastic, you can fit two people in the back, it's nearly the bat mobile and you get a bit more for your cash!

Any other advice/comments to persuade me to go Italian rather than British!?

Cheers!

Guy

Maserati all day long, looks better, sounds better, is rarer and has 4 usable adult seats IMHO

Here is a nice face lift version well in your Budget

Ultimately it's your call but suggest you test drive both and make a final decision

Try both. They'll be quite different.

Both marques are top notch smile

Thanks for your comments chaps.

Exactly, I'm being lured by the V8, a later car for your money and pure super car appeal by the Grancabrio.

The DB9 has always been my dream until I was seduced by the Maserati! Italians eh!? Beautiful women, Country AND cars!

So I need to pop over to JCT600 in Leeds and test drive both on the same day.

Decisions decisions!

Driving back to back is a great way to do it.

My feeling is that at your budget (and thus model year) it will be Maserati all day long. I own both and so feel reasonably qualified. If you were looking at post say 2014 cars then Aston all day long.

There is no bad choice here though if the car is a good one.

You own both!? How fabulous!

Something in me is wanting me to not like the Maserati, I should stay British and Bond (yep, I'm now sounding like a child!)

Anyway, one thing. I think that the DB9 will not depreciate much and say in 10 years or even sooner, might appreciate? I have told my wife that this third car idea is an investment!!! It's still costing me new carpets, curtains and wallpaper in several rooms!
Do you think the Grancabrio will appreciate over time OR at least not depreciate too much?

Sorry if these questions have been answered here before.

Right, better get earning some money!

I was the same about the Maserati v Aston and went British first time around and no regrets at all to the point I bought a second Aston to follow. But I still always had the Maserati itch to scratch, it won't go away you know smile

Sadly very very few cars are investments as even if they hold their value you MUST budget for proper servicing and maintenance. Grancabrio is a rarer beast but also a rarer market. Both cars are probably approaching the bottom end of their depreciation curve. Maserati will likely cost more to run over the long term.

If you plan on keeping the car a while then you would more likely regret not buying the Aston. But drive them both and I suspect the Maserati will exercise a hold on you that will be hard to shake off.

Hashluck, I really appreciate your time here, thank you.

No worries, I'm very aware of the need for proper servicing etc. I did spot that the carbon ceramic pads cost £12,000 on a Grancabrio, or is that only on the sportier model? Now that is a reason to shake me off! I can deal with a £1k or £2k bill every now and then, but £12k would make a grown man weep!!

Your last comment regarding if I'm looking for a keeper, then Aston is the one, has pretty much made up my mind.

Am I fickle or what!?

Anyway, on to the dealers asap!

Have a great week.

It's a nice position to be in.

I drove both a few years back but went for the Maser GT-S Auto. The rear seats were pretty spacious and the car was reliable except for a few really small electrical niggles like the iPod connection and the SatNav unit - which kept freezing and re-setting. It was eventually replaced under warranty which was good I thought. As everyone else is saying, it's the exhaust note that gets you going and will put a smile on your face each time you drive it. Oh and you'll also be visiting the petrol station quite a bit - but you probably know this already!

I wanted to stay / buy British etc like you but didn't gel with the DB9 or DBS for whatever reason at the time. The main dealer I was talking to were also pretty rubbish and came across as a little too up themselves for my liking. I'm sure others will have had better experiences. Another factor which swayed it for me against AM overall was a few friends coming back with quite high repair / non-warranty issues on their AM from the same main dealer. I know you could use an independent but at that time I was keen to go via the main dealer route for the warranty and peace of mind for me at that price point. I still look at the DBS and earlier DB9's now in the classified though!

Thanks for your reply James.

Right, I'm back on the Maser now! FF sake!!

I'm an Ex TVR Chimaera owner and have never found another car as comfortable/fab noise and fun, so V8 it is and by Ferrari, ahem!

I'm going to pop over to Leeds to JCT600 although they don't have a Cabrio at the moment, I'll try out a GT and then hope they can find one that I can afford. I'll also be popping next door to Aston Martin, they seem to have the same "Brand Director" so hopefully I'll get some impartial advice from him too.

BUT, I know the best and most honest advice is from you owner chaps here, so thanks again for your time in replying to me, a 47 year old little boy who loves sports cars! By the way, my life defining moment will be when I drive off with my 7 year old son in whatever I buy, can't wait!

Right, again, back to work!

By the way, I'm keen on sticking with a main dealer, but are there any specialists in the North that anyone would recommend?

Cheers!

Neither will appreciate. Both will depreciate. Possibly slowly.

Avoid these angles with the fairer sex. They will not forget!
