GranTurismo - reason for two exhaust pipes or four?

Hopefully a quick question that I've not found the answer to.. what is the reason that some GranTurismo's have two exhaust pipes and some have four exhaust pipes?

No reason beyond styling and model differentiation, and the model differentiation has got a bit complicated lately.

As far as I'm aware, original 4.2 version started with quad pipes, 4.7 version started with quad pipes, then there was a split between 4.7 Auto (quad pipes) and 4.7 MC-Shift (Two oval pipes). Then the MC Stradale came along, with a very different rear splitter and two more centrally positioned round pipes.
Then the 4.7 Sport came along , with both Auto & MC-Shift versions with Two oval pipes.

Not sure what the new MY2018 version has.

Indeed all very confusing. As OEM fit, the 4.2 always had unvalved back boxes with twin pairs of pipes whereas the 4.7s all had valved back boxes with the auto having twin pairs and the MC shift having twin ovals. However, various packs and model year changes can mean that 4.7 autos have ovals so anything is possible!

Agree about the Stradale having the twin rounds and, I think, for the final 2018 facelift one model has these twin central pipes and one has the twin, outer ovals.

I prefer 4 and unlike cars like the 2.0 Golf R, feel that a 4.2 Ferrari derived V8 is appropriate to have 4 pipes on

This was my understanding too.
Basically older models (4.2L and old autos) have 4 pipes, the newer Sport models (2013+) and MC Shift have 2 oval pipes is the way I think of it

Correct, also anodised single ovals per side for any GranCab SPORT (2011 onwards)

The guy is a well known troll on PistonHeads and only posts inflammatory/ antagonistic opinions designed to irritate. Has never revealed what car he drives and usually only posts once then disappears, often suckering unsuspecting people into replying to his drivel.
